Plant Process Control Electrician

Plant Process Control Electrician positions install, test, adjust, modify and maintain complex motor control and power systems, electrical machinery and equipment in water treatment facilities, wastewater treatment plants, water pump stations, wastewater pump stations and storm water pump stations; design, modify and program computerized electrical system control and data acquisition operations; analyze problems and make necessary repairs on electrical control systems that interface with process control computers; instruct other Electricians on complex aspects of their assignments; may lead lower level staff; and perform other duties as assigned. Wage Increase and Benefits Notes Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive general wage increases: 3.5% effective 7/1/27, 2% effective 7/1/28, 2% effective 1/1/29. Eligible employees hired on or after July 10, 2021 are automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). Employees may be required to work overtime, weekends and/or holidays, and participate in standby duty. Some positions require passing a medical physical, respiratory fit test and obtaining Confined Space Certification within six months from hire date, and to maintain certification thereafter. Employees operating commercial vehicles must submit to drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment; background checks are required. Experience One year of full‑time experience in all phases of work as a journey‑level electrician diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing and programming PLCs at a water or wastewater treatment plant or industrial production plant. Education / Experience Requirements In addition to the above experience, qualify with one of the following: Successful completion of an accredited four‑year Electrician Apprenticeship Program. Four years of full‑time experience in all phases of work as a journey‑level electrician, with two years including installing, troubleshooting and repairing a variety of electrical machinery and equipment in permanent building systems, power generation plants, water or wastewater treatment plants, or industrial plants, and qualifying experience in commercial or industrial wiring, installing and repairing electrical conduit systems, and troubleshooting industrial motor control systems, mechanical motor starters, soft starters, and variable frequency drives. Experience in residential electrical work only is not qualifying. Positions at wastewater treatment plants require experience installing, diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing industrial electronics. City of San Diego employees using OCA experience must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist. OCA experience without documentation will not be considered. Certificates and Licenses Some positions may require a valid California crane operator certificate within a year from hire date. A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire. Some positions may also require a valid California Class B Driver License. Highly Desirable Attributes Experience installing, modifying, and troubleshooting motor control systems. Experience in confined space training. Experience in fiber optics training. Experience with personal computers. Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70E, and 900MHz SCADA. Experience troubleshooting and maintaining electric motors, engine‑driven generators, and automatic transfer switches. Experience repairing, troubleshooting and installing level, pressure or flow rate instrumentation, motorized valve systems and industrial electronics. Experience installing PLCs. #J-18808-Ljbffr
