The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for providing comprehensive athletic healthcare services to FMU student-athletes, including injury and illness prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency care, and return-to-play support. This position provides direct athletic training coverage for assigned varsity athletic teams, practices, competitions, and other athletically related activities.
The Athletic Trainer works collaboratively with athletic training staff, team physicians, coaches, strength and conditioning staff, Athletics administration, and other healthcare professionals to support the health, safety, and well-being of FMU student-athletes.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong clinical judgment, professionalism, organization, communication, and a commitment to providing high-quality care in a fast-paced collegiate athletics environment.
This role is student-centered and mission-driven, requiring a professional who understands the importance of student-athlete health, academic achievement, competitive success, and holistic development.
Essential Functions:
- Provide comprehensive athletic training services, including injury and illness prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and appropriate referral.
- Evaluate athletic injuries and illnesses and determine appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, referral, and follow-up care within the Athletic Trainer's scope of practice.
- Develop and implement individualized rehabilitation and injury-prevention programs.
- Provide immediate and emergency care for student-athletes when necessary.
- Coordinate medical referrals and follow-up care with team physicians and other healthcare providers.
- Assist with return-to-play protocols and communicate appropriate participation status to student-athletes, coaches, and Athletics administration.
- Provide taping, bracing, therapeutic interventions, rehabilitation exercises, and other appropriate athletic training services.
- Provide direct athletic training coverage for assigned practices, competitions, conditioning sessions, and other athletically related activities.
- Provide appropriate pre-practice and pre-competition preparation, including treatment, taping, bracing, hydration support, and emergency equipment preparation.
- Respond appropriately to injuries and medical emergencies occurring during athletic activities.
- Monitor environmental conditions and other potential health and safety concerns associated with athletic participation.
- Travel with assigned athletic teams when required.
- Provide evening, weekend, holiday, and post-season coverage based on departmental and team schedules.
- Maintain accurate, timely, complete, and confidential student-athlete medical records using the University's designated electronic medical records system.
- Document injuries, evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation, referrals, medical restrictions, and return-to-play status.
- Assist with the collection, review, and maintenance of required student-athlete health documentation, including physical examinations, medical histories, insurance information, sickle cell documentation, consent forms, and other required records.
- Assist with confirming completion of applicable medical requirements prior to student-athlete participation.
- Assist student-athletes with athletic injury insurance documentation and claims when appropriate.
- Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of student-athlete medical information in accordance with applicable University policies and state and federal requirements.
- Assist with the daily operation, organization, cleanliness, and safety of the athletic training facility and designated treatment areas.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of athletic training supplies, medical equipment, hydration materials, and other necessary resources.
- Assist with ordering, inventory control, and proper maintenance of athletic training supplies and equipment.
- Ensure athletic training areas are appropriately prepared for practices and competitions and properly maintained following use.
- Assist in coordinating athletic training coverage across FMU athletic programs.
- Provide appropriate supervision and direction to athletic training interns, students, and other approved personnel as assigned.
- Assist with the development and implementation of sports medicine policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and annual review of Emergency Action Plans for FMU athletic facilities and competition venues.
- Ensure appropriate emergency equipment and medical supplies are available and accessible during assigned athletic activities.
- Maintain current knowledge of concussion management, heat illness, sudden cardiac events, emergency response, and other health and safety issues affecting student-athletes.
- Identify and communicate potential health and safety risks associated with athletic participation, facilities, equipment, and environmental conditions.
- Collaborate with Athletics staff to promote a safe environment for student-athletes.
- Work collaboratively with team physicians, coaches, strength and conditioning staff, Athletics administration, and other healthcare professionals regarding student-athlete care.
- Communicate appropriately with coaches regarding student-athlete participation status while maintaining medical confidentiality.
- Maintain consistent and professional communication with Athletics administration regarding significant injuries, medical concerns, athletic training coverage, and operational needs.
- Develop positive and professional relationships with student-athletes while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Support the overall health, safety, academic success, and development of FMU student-athletes.
- Ensure compliance with University, NAIA, Sun Conference, state, federal, and applicable professional rules, regulations, policies, and standards.
- Maintain current Board of Certification (BOC) certification and State of Florida Athletic Trainer licensure.
- Maintain current CPR/AED certification and other required emergency-care credentials.
- Maintain all continuing education requirements necessary for professional certification and licensure.
- Participate in required Athletics Department and University meetings, training, professional development, and institutional activities.
- Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professional and ethical conduct consistent with University policies and professional standards.
- Remain current with industry standards, research, legislation, and best practices related to athletic training and sports medicine.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
- Maintain all professional certifications and licensure required for the position.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by Athletics administration that are logically related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of athletic injury and illness prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care.
- Strong knowledge of current athletic training practices, professional standards, and applicable scope-of-practice requirements.
- Ability to evaluate student-athlete injuries and determine appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, referral, and follow-up care.
- Knowledge of concussion management, emergency response, heat illness prevention, and other student-athlete health and safety protocols.
- Ability to develop and administer rehabilitation and injury-prevention programs.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate, timely, and confidential medical documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to supervise and provide directions to interns and student personnel.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, dependability, and ethical standards.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced collegiate athletics environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and electronic medical record systems.
- Commitment to student-athlete health, safety, well-being, and success.
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master's degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification as an Athletic Trainer (ATC).
- Current State of Florida Athletic Trainer license, or ability to obtain Florida licensure prior to the start of employment.
- Current CPR and AED certification.
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional athletic training experience, preferably within collegiate athletics.
- Demonstrated experience with injury evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency care, and return-to-play protocols.
- Experience maintaining medical records and utilizing electronic medical record systems.
- Knowledge of applicable health, safety, and risk-management practices within collegiate athletics.
