Position Overview:
Develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for Florida National University intercollegiate sports. The associate athletic trainer will also perform professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and development of the program. He / She will also perform sports specific trainings. The Associate Athletic Trainer is responsible for all aspects of health care in the athletic environment. This includes prevention of athletic injuries; recognition and evaluation of injuries; management, treatment, and disposition of athletic injuries; rehabilitation of athletic injuries; organization and administration; and education and counseling of athletes, as outlined by the National Trainers Association (NATA). This Position must maintain appropriate certifications and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required in the field.
Other: The scope of the position requires weekend and evening work. Usually, 45-55 hours a week position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Communication Management: Respond promptly to daily communications via email and voicemail, addressing inquiries promptly and professionally.
- Policy Adherence and Ethical Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to the University's mission, policies, procedures, ethical standards, Catalog, Staff Handbook, and compliance with data protection regulations and pertinent legal regulations in all aspects of admission activities; as well as the University Athletic Department’s vision, mission, values, and aims and objectives.
- University Engagement: Participate in university events, committees, self-studies, new student orientation, and commencement exercises and ceremonies as needed.
- Special Projects & Assigned Duties : Execute special projects assigned by the President, Director of Athletics, or another supervisor. Perform any other assigned duties as required.
- Compliance Adherence: Ensure strict compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, as well as FNU Policies, Procedures, Rules and Regulations, the FNU Code of Ethics, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Florida Information Protection Act of 2014 (FIPA), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”), and all other applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Read, understand and comply with the University’s mission, the catalog, the University’s policies and procedures, the Staff Handbook and Institutional Effectiveness process.
2. Respond to communications (e-mail, voice mail) on a daily basis.
3. Work in conjunction with the strength and conditioning staff to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet individual student-athlete needs
4. Record keeping and documentation
5. Responsible for the taping, bracing, and padding of athletic-related injuries.
6. Responsible for delivering therapeutic modalities to athletic-related injuries.
7. Responsible for completing the necessary annual requirements of CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications and making sure all coaching staff is up to date in the same certifications.
8. The position requires someone with initiative and an energy level that will enable the individual to work long hours. The position does include evening and weekend assignments.
9. Ability to travel long distances when necessary for certain games
10. Work compatibly and cooperatively with all the coaching staff and all personnel within the University.
11. Assist with scheduling and organizing team pre-participation physicals and review of athlete’s health history. Assist team physicians.
12. Oversee selection of proper fitting plus maintenance of protective equipment, including the use of adhesive tape, bandage, and orthoses.
13. Reduce and control environmental hazards, hereby creating a safe environment.
14. Advise the coaching staff of general and specific health practice, training activities and programs.
15. In cooperation with the strength and Conditioning Coach, advise the coaching staff of appropriate weight training programs. Set restriction for Athletes at Risk.
16. Practice Universal Precautions (OSHA) when exposed to bodily fluids.
17. Support and participate in University Commencement Ceremonies.
18. Participate in the new students’ orientation.
19. Participate in the self-studies and committees conducted by the University.
20. Ensure they are in compliance with Title IX of Education Amendments Act of 1972.
1. Recognition and Evaluation
1. Through observation of daily practices and contest, and working in the athletic training room, identify and evaluate the severity of athletic injuries.
2. Evaluate acute injuries with referrals to team physicians or other health care professionals as needed.
3. Evaluate chronic injuries with referrals to team physicians or other health care professional as needed.
4. Assess patient progress.
5. Assess illnesses with referrals to team physician with referrals to team physicians or other health care professionals as needed.
6. Coordinate all team physician appointments.
2. Management and Treatment
1. Provide emergency and first aid care and treatment of acute injuries.
2. Implement athletic training staff emergency care procedures.
3. Facilitate transportation logistics to expedite emergency care.
4. Maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED certification.
5. Time permitting, provide first aid and injury referral of non-intercollegiate and club sports participants.
3. Rehabilitation
1. Under the supervision of the team physicians, administer therapeutic modalities. Design and implement injury rehabilitation programs.
2. Implement a sports-specific and injury-specific “return to play” plan
3. Apply therapeutic and protective bandaging and wrapping for practices and contests.
4. Organization and Administration
1. Assist in administering the University Athletic Injury insurance policy and claims processing. Coordinate primary and University insurance information for medical providers.
2. Assist in annually providing students and parents/guardians with written information regarding the University Athletics Injury policy.
3. Assist in annually acquiring and maintain primary insurance information for individual athletes.
4. Maintain accurate health, injury, treatment, rehabilitation and physician referrals for individual athletes. Maintain daily treatment records and rehabilitation progress notes. Protect the athlete’s privacy.
5. Organization and administration, including scheduling, of athletic department sponsored sports camps.
6. Supervise and teach athletic training students.
7. Assist in assigning athletic training students to practice, events and training room coverage.
8. Participate in the recruitment of student athletic trainers.
9. Maintain athletic training room facilities in a safe and sanitary condition. Apply University and Athletic Department policies and regulations in regards to the use/abuse of alcohol and drugs.
10. Assist with USCAA and NAIA institutional drug testing.
11. Coordinate equipment repair and training room maintenance.
12. Maintain or assist with maintaining inventory reports of athletic training supplies, equipment, and maintenance. Order necessary supplies.
5. Education and Counseling
1. Counsel and advise student-athletes and coaches in rehabilitation, conditioning, diet, nutrition, use of ergogenic aids, and the psychology of athletes.
2. Provide CPR training for coaches and other USD campus community members as needed.
6. Additional Responsibilities
1. Maintain all personal certification requirements, including CEUs for NATA certification.
2. Participate in Athletic Department meeting.
3. Be aware of and practice the NATA Code of Ethics.
4. Foster and maintain positive student body and faculty relations.
5. Report any potential NAIA/NCAA/USCAA Violations.
7. Job Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree required; master degree preferred.
2. 2-4 years of progressively responsible experience after NATA certification for Assistant Position.
