The Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) is responsible for administering medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, company policies, and Indiana regulations while also providing direct resident care as needed. This position works closely with the Director of Nursing, Licensed Practical Nurses, caregivers, physicians, pharmacies, and families to support resident wellness and safety.

Job Description

Medication Administration

• Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately according to physician orders and company policies.

• Follow the Five Rights of Medication Administration and all applicable Indiana regulations.

• Observe residents for medication effectiveness, side effects, and adverse reactions.

• Report medication concerns or resident condition changes promptly to the licensed nurse.

• Maintain medication carts, storage rooms, and controlled substances according to company standards.

• Ensure medication documentation is completed accurately and timely.

Resident Care

• Assist residents with activities of daily living as needed, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, and dining assistance.

• Encourage resident independence while providing assistance appropriate to each resident's service plan.

• Observe and report changes in resident condition, behavior, appetite, mobility, or cognition.

• Assist with transfers and mobility while maintaining resident dignity and safety.

• Respond promptly to resident call systems and requests for assistance.

Documentation & Compliance

• Document medication administration and resident care accurately and completely.

• Complete required documentation in accordance with company policies and state regulations.

• Maintain confidentiality of resident information at all times.

• Assist with medication audits, surveys, and regulatory inspections.

• Support ongoing survey readiness by maintaining organized documentation and medication systems.

Resident Safety & Wellness

• Promote resident safety by identifying and reporting potential hazards.

• Follow infection prevention and control procedures.

• Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established emergency procedures.

• Assist with wellness observations and communicate concerns to the nursing team.

• Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for residents.

Team Collaboration

• Communicate effectively with nurses, caregivers, physicians, pharmacies, and other team members.

• Participate in shift reports and interdisciplinary communication.

• Assist in training new caregivers and medication aides as assigned.

• Promote teamwork, professionalism, and a positive work environment.

• Support other departments as needed to ensure excellent resident care.

Requirements:

• Current Indiana Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) certification in good standing.
• Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, if required by state regulations.
• Current CPR certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
• Strong understanding of medication administration practices.
• Excellent communication and observation skills.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Must be insulin certified

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in assisted living, senior living, long-term care, or healthcare.
• Experience with electronic medication administration records (eMAR).
• Experience working with residents living with dementia.
• Additional training in infection prevention or resident wellness.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to assist residents with transfers and mobility.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, or transfer up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to respond quickly during emergencies.
• Ability to perform repetitive medication administration and documentation tasks throughout the shift.
