Work Schedule

The City of Desert Hot Springs utilizes a 4/10 work week schedule. This position is scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday, 6 am to 5 pm . Schedule is subject to change based on Department Head approval.


DEFINITION:
Under general supervision of the Public Works Director, learns to perform and performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involved in the maintenance, limited construction, or repair of City buildings, facilities, and equipment; performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

• Prepares surfaces for paving, mixes cement, breaks up paved surfaces;
• Uses such hand tools as shovel, rake, jackhammer and tampers;
• Loads and unloads trucks;
• Excavates and fills trenches and ditches;
• Operate compressors and spray rigs;
• Operate trucks and light mechanical equipment;
• Performs a variety of semiskilled and unskilled street maintenance and constructions duties;
• Maintains, mows and water lawns; trims and plants shrubs; cultivates and fertilizes lawns; Sprays weeds; rakes leaves and picks up trash from park areas;
• Cleans gutters and park pathways;
• Assists in planting of shrubs;
• Cleans and performs maintenance work on park equipment, buildings, and facilities; and cleans floors, windows and fixtures in park restrooms;
• Promote personnel safety programs;
• May operate a variety of motor-driven equipment, including skip loader, and water truck;
• Reviews and inspects work in progress and upon completion
• Fills in the "acting" position in the absence of the Sr. Maintenance Worker.

Typical Qualifications


EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND five years' work experience demonstrating progressive responsibilities for specialized tools, equipment and documentation; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS: (Physical and Environmental)

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at work sites throughout the City; required to perform skilled technical repair and maintenance work, and lift and carry up to 100 pounds. Must be able to work extended hours, weekdays, and holidays as needed, and respond to emergency callouts. May be required to travel to various sites, locations and/or events. Team members are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours; team members are required to assume duties of a disaster worker in the event of a locally declared emergency.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Employees in this classification serve a probationary period of one (1) year.

EMPLOYEE LEAVE: The City offers a generous Vacation and Sick leave program, plus 10 annual holidays and one (1) floating holiday. Employees accrue 80 hours per year of sick leave; employees accrue 80 hours of vacation leave for the first five years; after five years, employees accrue additional vacation leave based on years of service. .

BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAM: The City of Desert Hot Springs participates in the Civic Scholars Program and offers its full-time employees the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree at no cost to the employee. Civic Scholars is an employer sponsored college pathway for the employees of Desert Hot Springs that is fully online and self-paced. RETIREMENT: The City participates in the Social Security system and all employees are covered by the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employees pay the Member's contribution depending on their prior PERS eligibility. Membership is mandatory. The retirement formula for new employees is 2% at 60, or 2% at 62, depending on prior PERS eligibility, with highest three-year compensation average.

INSURANCE: The City contributes a maximum amount per month towards the cost of medical, dental and vision coverage available to employees and dependents; life insurance is paid by the City.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Available for interested employees, offered through ICMA.
