LOCATION OF POSITION(s): Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Davidson County. This position is hybrid (in office and remote). Criminal background check is required. Qualifications Education and Experience: Must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying full‑time experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer may substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis, to a maximum of four (4) years. NSQs (Non‑Standard Qualifications): Be willing to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons; applicant may not be prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm per 18 USC § 922(g) or any other state or federal law. Be at least twenty‑one (21) years of age on the date of application. Must be a citizen of the United States, or a permanent legal resident, provided the applicant applies for or obtains U.S. citizenship within six (6) years of the employment start date. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Upon appointment, be willing and able to obtain a security clearance if needed. Supply a fingerprint sample in the manner prescribed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) for a fingerprint‑based criminal history record check. Complete a criminal history and background disclosure form as approved by the appointing authority and agree to release all records involving any criminal history. Be subject to an intense background investigation, including state and federal criminal records, driving history, social media accounts, credit check, education, military service, prior employment, drug use, and reference verification. A candidate must not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty to, or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony or misdemeanor based on integrity (e.g., force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, DUI, or controlled substances). Certain youthful indiscretions may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis. Have no conviction for a felony or have been discharged under any other than honorable conditions from any branch of the U.S. armed forces. Must participate in pre‑employment, random, and for‑cause drug and substance abuse testing as required by departmental policies. Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that is consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and relates to the essential functions of the position. Be a Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified or certifiable law enforcement officer; or become P.O.S.T. certified within the first year of employment. Overview Under the general guidance of a supervisor, learn to conduct criminal investigations, prepare written reports and case files, collect evidence, and provide testimony in court proceedings. Additional duties may include compliance tasks. This entry‑level classification can advance to higher levels with increasing responsibilities. Responsibilities In compliance with agency policy, learn to conduct criminal investigations related to the unlawful and/or unlicensed manufacture, sale, and distribution of alcoholic beverages and hemp‑derived cannabinoid products, as well as certain Title 39 TCA criminal violations on licensee premises. Learn to gather information and evidence, including conducting interviews, analyzing criminal activity and data, forensic examination of records, undercover surveillance, and evidence analysis. Learn to prepare affidavits for search warrants, subpoenas, and arrest warrants, and testify in court. Prepare comprehensive narrative reports and maintain up‑to‑date data on investigations using a computer‑based Law Enforcement Records Management System (LERMS); complete reports within specified time frames per TN Incident Based Records System (TIBRS) with no more than a 4% failure rate. Apprehend, pursue, and/or subdue criminal suspects; use force up to and including deadly force in compliance with agency policy and state law. Participate in and maintain qualifications in physical training activities such as firearms, defensive tactics, and vehicle operation. Perform strenuous physical activity to support investigations, including confiscating property, securing locations, conducting searches, and deploying surveillance equipment. Exercise good judgment and discretion in high‑pressure or high‑risk situations, maintaining confidentiality. Collaborate with supervisors, peers, and other law enforcement agencies (local police, sheriff’s departments, TBI, THP, TWRA, federal agencies) to provide leadership and investigative support. Learn regulatory duties to ensure compliance by licensees, including inspections, financial investigations, complaints investigations, and targeted operations to prevent underage sales and over‑service investigations. Carry out administrative responsibilities as assigned and stay current on agency, state, and federal policies, procedures, statutes, and guidelines. Ensure compliance with federal law and conduct citizenship verifications; conduct investigative reviews including background investigations and licensing compliance checks.
