Landscape Construction Manager
Roebuck Landscaping
SUMMARY:
The Landscape Construction Manager, Alabama is the operating leader responsible for the overall performance, profitability, growth, and day-to-day execution of Bright Landscapes’ Landscape Construction Division. Reporting to the Director of Operations, Alabama, this position owns the division from project handoff through closeout and is accountable for project management, field operations, labor efficiency, scheduling, quality, safety, client satisfaction, and financial performance.
Because Bright Landscapes is building and scaling its Landscape Construction Division, this is a hands-on leadership role that combines division leadership, Project Management, and Construction Operations. The Landscape Construction Manager will personally manage projects and field execution while building the systems, processes, and leadership bench needed to support future growth. As the division expands, responsibilities should progressively be delegated into dedicated Project Management and Field/Operations leadership roles.
This is not a desk-based position. The Landscape Construction Manager is expected to maintain a strong presence on jobsites, stay close to crews and clients, solve problems in real time, and create a disciplined, scalable construction operation capable of delivering consistent quality and profitable growth.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Division P&L Ownership:
- Own the overall financial and operational performance of Bright Landscapes’ Landscape Construction Division.
- Deliver budgeted revenue, gross margin, labor efficiency, and profitability targets.
- Monitor project profitability, labor productivity, material costs, equipment utilization, and operating expenses.
- Partner with the Director of Operations and Finance to forecast revenue, labor demand, backlog, and resource requirements.
- Identify financial and operational variances early and implement corrective actions.
- Drive profitable, sustainable growth as the division expands.
Project Management & Client Ownership:
- Manage commercial landscape construction projects from turnover through completion and closeout.
- Review contracts, estimates, scopes, plans, budgets, schedules, and production assumptions before mobilization.
- Ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and according to client expectations.
- Maintain accurate project schedules, documentation, change orders, job costs, and closeout requirements.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for general contractors, developers, owners, and project stakeholders.
- Lead project meetings and resolve client, project, and operational issues quickly and professionally.
Field Operations & Daily Execution:
- Lead the daily operational rhythm across all active landscape construction projects.
- Translate project plans, budgets, and schedules into clear field production expectations.
- Maintain visibility across jobsites and adjust manpower, equipment, sequencing, and priorities as needed.
- Ensure crews are prepared with the materials, equipment, tools, plans, and direction required for production.
- Conduct regular jobsite visits to validate quality, productivity, safety, and schedule performance.
- Resolve field obstacles and production bottlenecks before they impact project performance.
Scheduling, Manpower & Backlog Planning:
- Own division-wide production scheduling, manpower planning, and project forecasting.
- Maintain visibility into project starts, workload, manpower requirements, and future backlog.
- Identify workload gaps, labor shortages, and capacity constraints before they impact production.
- Balance manpower and project schedules to maximize crew utilization and revenue generation.
- Align awarded backlog with realistic production capacity and resource availability.
- Build scalable manpower and scheduling processes to support future division growth.
Labor Efficiency & Productivity Management:
- Track budgeted versus actual labor hours and production performance across all projects.
- Establish clear productivity expectations and performance standards for field teams.
- Hold field leaders accountable for labor efficiency, quality, and schedule performance.
- Reduce rework, downtime, and non-productive labor through stronger planning and execution.
- Ensure landscape, irrigation, hardscape, grading, and related scopes meet plans, specifications, and company standards.
- Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, details, and layouts to support field execution.
Materials, Procurement, Equipment & Logistics:
- Plan material, equipment, subcontractor, and logistics requirements in advance of production.
- Review and approve purchase orders, material receipts, time entries, and operational transactions.
- Coordinate with vendors, procurement, yard personnel, and field teams to maintain project readiness.
- Prevent material and equipment delays that negatively impact field production.
- Drive accountability for equipment utilization, maintenance, inventory, and company assets.
Team Leadership & Organizational Development:
- Lead and develop Foremen, Crew Leaders, field teams, and future construction leaders.
- Establish clear performance expectations and accountability throughout the division.
- Recruit, onboard, train, and retain high-performing construction talent.
- Build the leadership structure required to support future division growth.
- Develop dedicated Project Management and Field/Operations leadership capacity as the division scales.
- Foster a culture of ownership where leaders proactively solve problems and drive results.
Safety & Risk Management:
- Lead a culture where safety is a non-negotiable expectation on every project.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, company policies, and client safety requirements.
- Maintain accountability for safe work practices across all crews and jobsites.
- Address unsafe conditions and behaviors immediately.
- Reinforce safety through consistent field leadership, training, and accountability.
Key Responsibilities: First Year Expectations & Ongoing Excellence
- Deliver projects safely, on time, within budget, and at or above targeted gross margin expectations.
- Improve labor efficiency, project forecasting, schedule reliability, quality, and job-cost accuracy across the division.
- Build a predictable manpower and backlog planning process that gives leadership forward visibility into capacity and hiring needs.
- Strengthen client relationships and establish Bright Landscapes as a reliable, professional commercial landscape construction partner.
- Develop field leaders and create a scalable organizational structure that allows Project Management and Operations responsibilities to be separated as the division grows.
- Standardize construction operating procedures, project controls, and accountability metrics that can support sustained growth.
- Reduce operational bottlenecks, rework, downtime, and last-minute material or equipment issues through proactive planning.
- Build a Landscape Construction Division that can grow profitably without becoming dependent on one person for every decision.
