Description CREW LEADER - STREETS Position Title: Crew Leader - Streets Department: Public Works Reports To: Public Works Superintendent Salary Range: 4 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime pay) Last Update: January 1, 2020 Job Summary: This position is responsible for leading and directing the work of a public works maintenance crew. Incumbent supervises the day to day activities of the street maintenance crews. Assists in scheduling work assignments. This classification also performs the more complex and difficult tasks in the maintenance and repair of the City's streets, and other public works facilities. The Crew Leader (Streets) performs skilled and responsible work supervising and directing the activities and work of the Street Division in maintaining the City's streets, alleys, and storm sewers.
Job Scope: The employee in this position is a working lead responsible for assigning and leading the work activities of the street division. The Crew Leader - Streets is responsible for achieving the objectives established for street repairs including patching and sealing, grading, ditching, snow removal, overlaying, and other maintenance of driving surfaces. This employee is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment used in the performance of assigned tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: ? Leads the daily activities of Street Division employees. ? Assists in establishing daily assignment schedule. ? Assists in preparing annual division budget requests. ? Completes necessary daily documentation and reports. ? Responsible for training subordinate employees. ? Assigns, directs, and inspects a variety of work tasks ? Assist in annual performance evaluations of subordinate personnel. ? Assist in all aspects of the street maintenance work, and storm drainage system. ? Insure safety guidelines are followed on job sites. ? Leads snow removal on night crew. ? Performs other related duties as deemed necessary or as required. Education, Certification and Experience Requirements: High school diploma or GED. Three years experience in street maintenance and construction work similar to that of the Sr. Maintenance Worker in the City of Gardner KS, or equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, ability and skill. Requires the possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a good driving record. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of street construction including alleys, curbing and sidewalks. Good knowledge of the operations, maintenance, adaptability and limitations of the equipment used. Ability to make minor repairs of equipment used in the field. Ability to follow oral or written instructions. Ability to plan, schedule and supervise the work of subordinates performing a variety of tasks under diverse operating conditions. Ability to inspire and motivate subordinates. Ability to perform physical labor in varied climatic and work situations. Ability to read and interpret diagrams and blueprints. Problem solving requirements include completion of work assignments in a timely manner, assessing equipment problems/defects, analyzing possible courses of corrective action, and implementing corrective action. Timely reporting/resolution of problems perceived by the general public is also required. Decision making requirements include determining the best methods of repair and maintenance, proper prioritization of activity, and use of appropriate resources, equipment, and safety practices. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with superiors, subordinates, and other employees and the general public contacted in the course of the work. Tools and Equipment Used: Automobiles, pick-up trucks, self-propelled tractor-mowers, motor grader, front-end loader, street sweeper, street overlay machine, oiler, skid-steer loader with hydraulic attachments, flat-steel roller, rubber-tire roller, backhoe, farm-type tractor with implements, dump truck, and snow plow. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be capable to negotiate rough terrain on foot to access maintenance problems. Must be capable to operate a variety of motorized equipment. Must be capable of lifting 75 lb. or more in confined space during execution of duties. Requires mobility to complete errands, flexibility of body, manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination adequate to use equipment as assigned. Must be able to work at heights well above ground level. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, this position functions primarily on a job site. Manual labor is required.
