Responsibilities Evaluate requests for criminal charges and issue criminal process and search warrants. Conduct initial appearances, including bond hearings, for defendants upon arrest. Preside over Small Claims Court hearings and marriage ceremonies. Work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Serve as an officer of the district court in accordance with NC General Statutes §7A 170-179. Qualifications Exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently. Proficiency in general office and computer skills. Understand North Carolina Court System procedures. Team player with the ability to work under pressure. Communicate effectively with the general public. Prior experience as a magistrate, active law license from any state, or equivalent experience. Eligibility Must be a resident of Caldwell County or one of its contiguous counties. Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university. OR eight years as a law enforcement officer in NC. OR an associate degree plus four years of work experience in a related field (e.g., teaching, social services, law enforcement, arbitration or mediation, the court system, or counseling).
