Laborist

A laborist (also known as an OB/GYN hospitalist) is an obstetrician-gynecologist who specializes in providing care to women in labor and delivery, primarily within a hospital setting. Laborists are dedicated to delivering babies and responding to obstetrical and gynecological emergencies, ensuring continuity of care for patients in labor, especially when a patient's own OB/GYN is not immediately available. Job Responsibilities Providing direct inpatient obstetric care, including managing labor, deliveries, and postpartum care. Handling obstetric triage evaluations, performing vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections, and responding to obstetric emergencies. Collaborating with other specialists, promoting a culture of safety, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. Providing comprehensive inpatient coverage for patients requiring obstetric admission, including managing labor, overseeing deliveries, and ensuring proper postpartum care. Evaluating patients presenting in triage and facilitating their admission or discharge as clinically indicated. Managing both routine and complex deliveries, including operative vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Responding to obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, eclampsia, and maternal-fetal resuscitation. Collaborating with maternal‑fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and nursing staff to ensure optimal patient care. Promoting a culture of safety through open communication and debriefing, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. Required Qualifications MD or DO graduate. Board certified or board eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology. NYS licensure. Availability to work (13) 12‑hour shifts per month and one weekend shift per month. Preferred Qualifications Post‑graduate experience in a group practice or group setting. Experience in OB/GYN. Physical Demands May spend a great deal of the professional day walking, standing, moving and manipulating equipment, as well as lifting and moving objects, equipment, and supplies. Ability to lift 20 pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients or objects may involve lifting of up to 50 pounds, as well as assisting with weights of more than 100 pounds. Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend or twist the body, as well as visual acuity. Salary Range: $285,000–$325,000 annually. Location: South Bay OBGYN.
