Senior BI Engineer / Senior Looker Developer (Contract)

LHH Recruitment Solutions is partnering with a growing national organization to identify an experienced Senior BI Engineer / Senior Looker Developer for a high-impact contract engagement. This is an opportunity to join a modern data organization and play a critical role in enhancing trust, governance, and self-service reporting across the business.

This position is ideal for a BI professional who thrives in existing environments, enjoys untangling complex reporting challenges, and has a strong passion for data quality, KPI governance, and stakeholder collaboration.
Position Overview

Our client has invested in a modern analytics ecosystem and is seeking an experienced BI Engineer to elevate the maturity of its reporting environment. This role is focused primarily on Looker and LookML development, dashboard validation, KPI governance, reporting optimization, and business stakeholder engagement .

The successful consultant will help inventory, validate, standardize, and improve an established Looker environment while partnering closely with business leaders and technical teams to ensure reporting accuracy and consistency.

This is not a greenfield BI build, data engineering, or pipeline development role. Instead, the focus is on ensuring business users can trust the data, understand KPI definitions, and confidently self-serve reporting needs.
Responsibilities

• Assess and inventory existing Looker dashboards, Explores, metrics, usage patterns, and ownership.
  
• Prioritize reporting assets requiring validation, cleanup, optimization, or governance improvements.
  
• Partner directly with stakeholders across Sales, Operations, Finance, and other business functions to gather requirements and understand reporting needs.
  
• Validate dashboards and Explores against underlying warehouse and source data.
  
• Identify and resolve metric inconsistencies, reporting discrepancies, and data trust issues.
  
• Establish and maintain a KPI catalog and data dictionary documenting metric definitions, calculations, ownership, filters, and validation notes.
  
• Standardize field names, descriptions, and business definitions throughout the Looker environment.
  
• Improve and maintain LookML models, Explores, dimensions, measures, and PDTs.
  
• Optimize Looker performance through improvements to caching, datagroups, PDT strategies, and instance organization.
  
• Identify business logic better suited for upstream transformation and collaborate with the Data Engineering team on implementation.
  
• Repoint and validate Looker content following approved data model enhancements.
  
• Manage LookML changes using Git and pull request workflows.
  
• Improve overall platform usability by archiving stale content, simplifying Explores, organizing fields, and reducing complexity.
  
• Create SOPs, governance documentation, publishing standards, and feature-request processes.
  
• Conduct knowledge-transfer sessions and provide clear handoff documentation.
  
• Maintain project work items and provide regular status updates on completed work, upcoming priorities, and blockers.
  

Required Qualifications

• 4+ years of Business Intelligence, Analytics Engineering, or related experience.
  
• Extensive hands-on experience with Looker and LookML development .
  
• Strong expertise working with:

• Advanced SQL skills.
  
• Working knowledge of dbt and modern data modeling best practices.
  
• Experience with Snowflake or a comparable cloud data warehouse platform.
  
• Experience using Git and pull request workflows.
  
• Strong background in dashboard reconciliation, data validation, and troubleshooting reporting discrepancies.
  
• Experience creating KPI catalogs, business glossaries, data dictionaries, or governance documentation.
  
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  
• Demonstrated ability to work directly with business stakeholders to define, validate, and document reporting requirements.
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Matillion or similar ELT platforms.
  
• Acumatica ERP experience.
  
• Distribution, logistics, manufacturing, or ERP reporting experience.
  
• Looker dashboard certification experience.
  
• Looker platform cleanup, consolidation, and governance experience.
  
• Formal Looker certification.
  
• Experience inheriting and improving an existing BI environment.
  

Ideal Candidate Profile

The strongest candidates will have experience in situations such as:

• Inheriting a complex Looker environment with conflicting metrics and reporting inconsistencies.
  
• Partnering with Finance, Sales, Operations, and technology teams to establish trusted KPI definitions.
  
• Cleaning up and optimizing semantic layers and reporting structures.
  
• Creating certified dashboards and trusted self-service reporting solutions.
  
• Moving inappropriate dashboard logic upstream through collaboration with Data Engineering teams.
  
• Building sustainable governance, documentation, and reporting standards.
  

We're particularly interested in professionals who demonstrate a strong "verifier's instinct" and can independently validate business requirements against underlying data rather than simply accepting assumptions at face value.
