SALARY: $66,066 - $78,234 / Annually*

*Additional 10% jail differential pay for positions within the County Jail

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Our cooks prepare meals with purpose. Not only do they perform all kitchen and food prep duties, but they also provide valuable life skills and job training to Marin County Jail incarcerated persons. Under general supervision, the incumbent in this position will prepare, cook and serve food in the Marin County Jail; clean equipment and maintain health and safety regulations in the kitchen facilities; and direct kitchen incarcerated person workers in food preparation service and cleanup activities. The current position requires work on assigned shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

There is currently one (1) full time regular hire vacancy within the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

ABOUT YOU:

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of the procedures and equipment required to prepare and serve a high volume of meals in an institutional setting and of the necessary safety and sanitation procedures related to the preparation and storage of food in a high volume setting. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience following menus and recipes and coordinating food preparation to ensure that food is ready at established times. The ideal candidate must also have the ability to supervise and work with incarcerated persons in the jail.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed below. Typically, equivalent to one (1) year of food preparation, service and clean up in a large institutional or similar volume setting. Candidates must pass a sanitation and safety certification course immediately after hire.

Testing and Eligible List: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination may consist of a highly qualified review, application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates' names will be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill the current vacancy, and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the list remains active.

 

Bilingual Testing/Certification: If the successful candidate possesses bilingual skills and demonstrates proficiency in both Spanish and English, a bilingual proficiency exam may be administered to ensure the candidates possess the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements for bilingual skills pay. 

Background Process: Applicants successful in testing will be subject to a thorough and rigorous background investigation which may include, but is not limited to, a criminal records check, interviews with friends, relatives, neighbors, and employers; verification of DMV records; and overall employment and education history. An applicant may be disqualified for past criminal convictions, poor driving record, providing false background information, and other reasons.

Drug Use Standards: No use of illegal drugs within the timelines described in the Pre-Employment Drug Use Guidelines. Applicants successful in testing will be given a polygraph examination and/or computerized voice stress analysis and will be asked about illegal drug use.

Personal Appearance Standards - Tattoos: No tattoo or body art that is offensive, demeaning, or prejudicial to good order shall be visible. Examples of offensive tattoos include but are not limited to those that exhibit or advocate discrimination, those that exhibit gang, supremacist, or extremist group affiliation, and those that depict or promote drug use, sexually explicit acts, or other obscene material. Details of the full policy are described in the Personal Appearance Standards – Tattoos Policy. The appropriateness of tattoos as defined by the policy shall remain at the sole discretion of the Sheriff or designee.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
