Chief Financial Officer

Role Overview A senior leadership position responsible for the financial health and long-term fiscal sustainability of the Federation and its partner organizations — Akiva School, Jewish Middle School, Kehillah High School, Sherith Israel, and Sherith Israel Cemetery. The CFO reports directly to the CEO and works closely with the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.

Core Responsibilities The role covers a broad scope, including financial strategy and planning, accounting operations and internal controls, annual budgeting, audit and tax compliance, banking and investment oversight, insurance management, HR/benefits coordination, and grant and campaign financial support. The CFO also serves as primary staff for the Camp Scholarship Committee and Israel Incentive Grants Program.

Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required; a CPA or advanced degree is strongly preferred. The position calls for 7–10+ years of financial leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission-driven setting. Familiarity with Jewish communal life is a plus but not required.

Job Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Leadership

• Lead all fiscal and administrative functions including audits, tax filings, management reports, and year-end financials
• Provide strategic financial insight to the CEO, senior leadership, and Boards
• Monitor financial trends to anticipate risks and opportunities

Financial Operations & Controls

• Oversee accounting, budget, and administration with strong internal controls
• Manage cash flow, accounts payable, disbursements, and 1099 generation
• Ensure all General Ledger accounts are accurately reconciled
• Review and update financial policies and systems

Budget Development & Management

• Lead annual budget development and consolidate all departmental inputs
• Partner with the Treasurer on budget presentations to the Finance Committee and Board
• Provide monthly financial reports and analysis

Audit, Tax & Compliance

• Serve as primary contact for external auditors
• Oversee annual audit and tax return preparation
• Ensure audit recommendations are implemented and compliance standards met

Banking, Investments & Insurance

• Oversee banking relationships and account reconciliations
• Manage investment manager relationships and Federation/Foundation investments
• Annually review insurance policies for adequate coverage
• Partner with HR to coordinate employee benefits administration, including health, disability, and retirement plans

Campaign, Grants & Community Support

• Support the Campaign Department with pledge, payment, and accounting procedures
• Oversee monthly reconciliation of campaign data and tax letters
• Support the Grants Committee and monitor beneficiary disbursements
• Serve as primary staff for the Camp Scholarship Committee and Israel Incentive Grants Program
• Ensure timely distribution of annual Foundation allocations

Special Projects

• Provide financial input for strategic initiatives and cross-departmental efforts

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field
• CPA or advanced degree strongly preferred

Experience

• 7–10+ years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience
• Nonprofit or mission-driven organization background is ideal
• Experience supervising staff and managing complex financial operations

Technical Expertise

• Budgeting, financial reporting, audit management, and compliance
• Investment management, insurance, and risk mitigation

Skills

• Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities accurately and with integrity in a fast-paced environment

Cultural Fit

• Knowledge of Jewish communal life and values — preferred but not required
