Meter Technician

Incumbents in this position are responsible for participating in the installation and repair of water meters and services. This position is assigned to pay grade G14. Assists with large water meters, testing, repairs, and replacements as needed. Verifies line sizes and line splits. Install and program Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) devices in accordance with company procedures. Make repairs to service lines, meters, and related equipment. Investigate, troubleshoot, and repair or replace meters and AMR/AMI devices as needed. Works independently and assists other technicians as directed. Provides accurate and detailed information entered into the work order system as requested. Operates and maintains an assigned truck safely and per CFPUA's SOP. Sets up and maintains a safe work zone per CFPUA's SOP. Performs rotating scheduled 24/7 emergency on-call work. Pulls and resets meters. Attends regular information and training meetings. Responds to water system emergencies. Performs other related job duties as assigned. In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Six (6) months of general work experience in a role using hand/power tools is required. Work experience as a meter technician, meter reader or plumber is preferred. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid State of North Carolina driver's license. Very light physical work at desk or counter level with intermittent periods of sitting, standing, and walking. May involve data entry, telephone work, or use of various office equipment. Some: Up to 2 hours or 20% of scheduled shift – Same as above with the addition of standing/sitting/walking for lengthy periods of time. May involve light physical exertion due to pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting weights up to 20 pounds. Frequent: 2 to 5 hours or 20% to 60% of scheduled shift – Physical exertion involving pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 20 pounds. May require prolonged standing and/or walking during which time objects are transported. May require occasional bending, squatting, and reaching. Very Frequent: More than 5 hours or 60% to 100% of scheduled shift – Sustained physical activity throughout the work period. Performs work tasks involving pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting up to 50 pounds. May require bending, squatting, stooping, reaching, climbing, or walking in addition to other physical demands. Physical exertion throughout the work period. Performs work tasks involving pushing, pulling, carrying and lifting varying weights up to 50 pounds, and more than 50 pounds with assistance.
