Work Arrangement: Hybrid (In-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire Position Overview Our client is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to join their finance team in a contract-to-hire capacity. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role will oversee core accounting functions, financial reporting, compliance activities, and process improvement initiatives while supporting the company's continued growth. The ideal candidate will bring a strong accounting foundation, experience working in dynamic environments, and the ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day execution. The office is conveniently located in Chicago's River North neighborhood with easy access to CTA and Metra public transportation options. Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and month-end close activities. Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Oversee balance sheet reconciliations and resolve account discrepancies. Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Financial Planning & Analysis Support Partner with the CFO and FP&A Analyst to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis activities. Monitor financial performance and provide variance analysis to support business decision-making. Assist with financial modeling and other ad hoc analytical projects. Compliance & Regulatory Reporting Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local financial regulations. Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and other financial partners. Support the preparation of tax documentation and filings. Maintain organized documentation for audits and regulatory reviews. Process Improvement & Systems Evaluate and improve accounting processes to increase efficiency and accuracy. Assist with the implementation, optimization, and enhancement of financial systems and reporting tools. Develop and maintain standardized reporting processes and metrics. Provide leadership and mentorship to accounting personnel as the organization expands. Support the development of scalable finance and accounting processes to accommodate future growth. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. CPA certification preferred. 5-8+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience. Experience within manufacturing, agriculture, industrial, or other multi-location operating environments strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting standards, month-end close processes, and accounting controls. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP/accounting systems; NetSuite experience preferred. Experience leading system implementations, process improvements, or finance transformation initiatives. Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills. Demonstrated integrity, attention to detail, accountability, and ownership mentality. Experience working in growing, entrepreneurial, or fast-paced organizations is highly desired.
