Senior Accountant

Senior AccountantFred Smith Construction is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our finance team and play a key role in supporting accurate financial reporting and day-to-day accounting operations. This position reports directly to the CFO and is well-suited for a hands-on professional who takes ownership of their work, follows through, and looks for ways to improve how things are done.This role goes beyond routine accounting. We are looking for someone who is naturally curious, thinks critically about the numbers, and is motivated to dig deeper to strengthen processes and uncover insights.Key ResponsibilitiesPrepare and review financial statements, supporting schedules, and account analyses to ensure accuracy and completenessPerform detailed account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and drive timely resolutionSupport month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, variance analysis, and balance sheet integrityContribute to job cost accounting efforts, including tracking and analyzing project costs and partnering with operations to ensure accuracyWork closely with the CFO to analyze financial results, including deeper review of P&L activity and cost driversAssist with audit preparation and compliance-related activitiesIdentify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen controls, and increase efficiencyTake initiative to work through large data sets and independently identify areas for further review or improvementWhat We're Looking ForBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or a project-based environmentExperience with job costing and understanding of project financialsStrong reconciliation skills and attention to detailProficiency in Excel and experience with Viewpoint Vista or similar ERP systemsAbility to manage time effectively across busy close cycles and quieter periodsStrong analytical mindset with a willingness to dig into the "why" behind the numbersProfessional communication skills and the ability to build working relationships across teamsSelf-starter who takes initiative and ownership of outcomesLocal applicants are preferred.
