Accounting Associate

StephenCenter has served homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha since1984 with the mission to partner with the community, families andindividuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty. ThePettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing offeringsprovide safe and secure housing while individuals and families completean assessment of permanent housing options. All Stephen Center residentshave access to dual diagnosis support services via the HEROaddiction/recovery program. 100% of Stephen Center shelter supportivehousing participants are living in poverty. Housing transition supportidentifies poverty barriers that may impact one’s ability to achieve ormaintain permanent housing through case management, life skills, andbehavioral health services. Stephen Center serves approximately 250people daily in all programs. Purpose The Accounting Associate will play acrucial role in maintaining the financial records and assisting with theday-to-day accounting functions of the Stephen Center. This position willreport to the CFO and will be responsible for ensuring accurate financialdata entry, processing transactions, and supporting the financial reportingprocess. Reportingdirectly to the CFO, this role performs professional accounting work acrossaccounts payable, month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, grantreporting, purchasing, inventory management, audit support, and financialanalysis. The position is expected to think critically, identifyopportunities for improvement, leverage technology, and contribute to aculture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning. Key Accountabilities Accounting Operations (30%) Manage Bill.com invoice workflow and vendorpayments. Maintain vendor records and proper GLcoding. Prepare journal entries and maintainsupporting documentation. Month‑End Close (20%) Complete assigned balance sheetreconciliations. Reconcile bank, credit card, prepaid, fixedasset and other accounts as assigned. Assist with monthly close checklist andaccruals. Purchasing & Inventory (20%) Support purchasing activities. Manage MaintainX inventory records. Financial Reporting & Analysis (5%) Prepare recurring financial reports. Perform budget‑to‑actual and ad hocanalysis. Assist with dashboards and managementreporting. Grants & Compliance (5%) Prepare reimbursement requests and grant schedules. Maintain audit‑ready documentation. Audit & Internal Controls (5%) Assist with the preparation audit schedules. Recommend and implement stronger internalcontrols. Support policy and procedure documentation. Technology & Process Improvement (5%) Leverage NetSuite, Bill.com, Excel and othersystems. Identify automation opportunities. Document and improve finance workflows. Provide outstanding service to departments,vendors and auditors. Communicate professionally and protectconfidential information. Success in the First 90 Days Develop a working knowledge of StephenCenter's programs, chart of accounts, and accounting systems. Independently process Accounts Payablethrough Bill.com with minimal supervision. Complete assigned reconciliations accuratelyand on time. Become proficient in NetSuite, MaintainX,and finance workflows. Contribute at least one meaningful processimprovement recommendation. Annual Performance Expectations Consistently meet month‑end close deadlines. Maintain accurate reconciliations withminimal adjustments. Produce timely, accurate grant reporting. Support the annual financial audit. Continuously improve finance processes anddocumentation. Core Competencies Analytical Thinking Attention to Detail Ownership & Accountability Professional Communication Problem Solving Integrity & Confidentiality Adaptability Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting stronglypreferred; Associate's degree with relevant experience considered. 2–5 years of progressive accountingexperience; nonprofit experience preferred. Strong understanding of GAAP, journalentries, accrual accounting, reconciliations, and internal controls. Advanced Excel skills preferred(PivotTables, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS; Power Query). Experience with NetSuite, Bill.com,MaintainX, Microsoft 365, and financial reporting systems. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Assigned month‑end close tasks completed bydeadline. 100% of assigned balance sheetreconciliations completed monthly. Vendor invoices processed accurately andtimely. Grant reporting submitted accurately and onschedule. Meaningful process improvements implementedannually. Professional Development Stephen Center invests in developing finance professionals.
