Police Officer

Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property; for the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes; and for maintaining law and order. Work involves an element of personal danger and generally is performed in uniform. Specific assignments are received from superior officers and carried out in accordance with established rules, policies and procedures; however, employees must be able to act without direct supervision in meeting emergencies. Work is reviewed through reports, inspections and observation of results obtained. Examples of Duties Patrol a designated area in the city on foot, by motorcycle, or in a patrol car, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, enforce traffic regulations, answer calls and complaints, administer first aid, operate radar/laser equipment for speed checks, and serve warrants. Conduct preliminary investigations at the scene of crime and serious accidents, conduct searches of persons and crime scenes to gather evidence, locate and interview witnesses, make arrests and interrogate prisoners. Direct traffic at intersections and at accidents. Process the scene of crime or accident (take photographs, perform gunshot residue tests), record checks, and write detailed reports on computer and paper. Investigate complaints and crimes involving juveniles; make referrals to court or social agencies, interview and counsel juveniles, parents and other interested parties; check areas or establishments frequented by juveniles for harmful conditions or influences. Transport prisoners, mental patients and juveniles; take custody of prisoners, maintain order, provide for their needs, supervise their activity; appear in court to present evidence and testify against accused persons. Perform related work as required. Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or GED certificate. Experience and/or training in dealing with the public. Must be at least 21 years of age and in good physical condition at the time of appointment. Must hold a valid Ohio driver's license. Must have Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification. Experience must include: enforcing state and local criminal laws and ordinances; enforcing state and local traffic laws and ordinances; making physical arrests; investigating traffic accidents; operating an emergency vehicle; responding to calls for service involving conflict management/mediation. Each applicant considered must be a resident of Mahoning County or an adjacent Ohio County at the time of hire. Each applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation, including a polygraph test/voice stress analysis (lie detector), a psychological test, drug testing, credit report, and employment history. Examination and Selection Process The written examination will be administered on Saturday, July18,2026 at the Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200E. Wood Street, Youngstown, Ohio, starting at 10:00 am. Applicants must file an application prior to the close of the application period to be eligible for the examination. All applicants must show some form of photo‑identification (driver's license, for example) at examination check‑in. Bonus points will be awarded to passing scores (70%) for certain qualifications, up to a maximum of 20% of the applicant’s passing score. Bonus categories include graduate degree, proof of city residency, reserve component status, and military veteran status, each with specified documentation requirements. Exam and bonus point deadlines are subject to extension by the Civil Service Commission if applicants enroll in police or fire academies during the application period.
