Assistant Vice President, Ports and Marine Engineering WSP in the U.S. Posted March 9 Part‑time Location: Portland Salary: Negotiable (all locations $100,000–$180,000) Job Description WSP USA is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Ports and Marine Engineering to join our National Maritime Practice Group . This position can be based in one of the following offices: Irvine, San Francisco, San Diego – CA, Miami – FL, Portland – OR, Houston – TX, Tampa – FL. WSP has part‑time and full‑time openings for this position. Responsibilities include providing subject‑matter technical support and leadership for the development, design, construction, and inspection of port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects. The facilities may include piers, wharves, upland marine terminals, seawalls/bulkheads, dry docks, marinas, and other near‑shore/off‑shore facilities. You will ensure delivery of high‑quality work products that meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Your Impact Responsible‑in‑charge of supervising technical staff, engineers, and task leads, tracking workloads and participating in forecasts. Mentor staff for professional growth and transition to project leads and senior technical positions. Prepare and/or perform oversight of calculations, cost estimates, drawings, technical specifications, and reports/studies. Track progress of milestone activities, manage completion of Plans, Specifications and Estimate (PS&E) submissions. Assist with engineering review of permit applications to ensure compliance with state and/or federal regulations. Perform QA/QC checks for marine facility projects, including cargo terminals, federal facilities, and client projects. Prepare alternatives analysis reports and presentations for repair projects and capital improvement programs. Manage cross‑functional teams to execute large‑scale or multiple concurrent mid‑level projects. Coordinate multidisciplinary teams comprised of civil, structural, geotechnical, electrical, mechanical, coastal, fire protection, and architecture. Serve as engineer of record and provide high‑level technical assistance on marine, port, and coastal system issues. Maintain project schedules, budgets, and profitability; monitor external events, hours, expenses, and subcontractor performance. Lead review meetings, client presentations, and design charrettes. Lead preparation of technical proposals and presentations; participate in client interviews and scope negotiations. Develop client base for marine, port, and coastal engineering services and identify new business development opportunities. Stay current on the latest marine, port, and coastal engineering techniques and practices. Adhere to workplace safety, health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies. Work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek. Occasionally meet travel demands, depending on client and project‑specific requirements. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program. 10+ years of post‑education experience with marine and coastal design (rehabilitation and new design). Professional Engineering license required (multi‑state preferred) or ability to obtain within 6 months. Proficiency in technical computations and calculations for ports and marine structures. Highly proficient in technical writing, engineering software, and fundamentals including statics and logical problem‑solving. Proficiency with AutoCAD, REVIT, SAP2000, and similar tools; ability to supervise their use. Experience with design/build processes. Ability to lead site inspections and investigations per applicable regulations and policies. Knowledge of maritime codes (ASCE, COPRI, etc.) and DoD criteria (UFC, UFGC). Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences. Proficiency with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management. Strong self‑leadership and communication skills to interact with clients, regulators, architects, engineers, and managers. Independent work ability with strict adherence to QA/QC processes. Experience with critical review of submittals and preparation of technical deliverables for complex projects. Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills applied to planning and engineering. Track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP policies. Ability to work schedules beyond typical workweek. Occasional travel may be required. Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card with TSA background check. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program. Structural Engineering license. Active participant of national professional practice organization. Ability to obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) background check for access to U.S. Navy facilities.
