Police Officer

Under general supervision, patrols City streets; enforces local, state, and federal laws; maintains law and order and protects life, property, and deters crime. Enforces all federal and state laws and City ordinates relating to public safety and welfare, performing all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of safety. Performs routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the City, responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance, investigating criminal incidents, apprehending and arresting suspects and violent persons, securing crime scenes, issuing traffic citations/summonses, conducting traffic stops, seizing property and/or criminal evidence, fingerprinting, photographing suspects, maintaining public order, interrogating suspects, transporting prisoners and mentally ill patients, and performing related tasks. Receives reviews, prepares, and/or submits various documents such as incident reports, accident reports, booking reports, fingerprint cards, maintenance records, victim reports, evidence/property records, traffic citations, use‑of‑force reports, and related documents. Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers. Assists in criminal investigations. Provides testimony and presents evidence in court; provides court security as required. Performs duties related to crime prevention and community relations. Provides information to and communicates with immediate supervisor, other department supervisors, coworkers, subordinates, other City personnel, other law‑enforcement agencies, emergency response departments/agencies, court personnel, attorneys, suspects, victims, witnesses, complainants, business/property owners, civic/community organizations, and the general public. Assists with emergency rescue activities as needed. Attends required training courses and seminars; participates in required activities. Attends departmental meetings. Processes prisoners entering the jail system by searching prisoners before entering jail areas, taking fingerprints, and taking photographs. Education and Experience High School Education or Equivalent; up to 6 months of experience, or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. When assigned as Canine Handler, Narcotics Investigator, or School Resource Officer: High School Education or Equivalent; and two years of police experience; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Licenses and Certifications Necessary: Valid Driver’s License, Alabama P.O.S.T. Certification, Firearms Qualification. Desirable: Drager Operator, CPR, Radar Operator, Taser Defense Stray. Training and Certifications by Assignment Canine Handler: Basic Canine Handler School. Narcotics Investigator: Basic Narcotics RCTA. School Resource Officer: School Resource Training, Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Community Resource Officer: Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). SWAT Member: Physically and mentally able to complete a competitive selection process; complete a basic tactical operator course. Field Training Officer: Complete an approved Field Training Officer Course. IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS Participates in surveillance and special operations as assigned. Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles. Performs other related duties as assigned. Role‑Specific Responsibilities Juvenile Investigator: Investigates crimes involving juvenile suspects and victims; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and processes for court; works closely with the Juvenile Court System, Adult Court System, District Attorney’s Office, and local school and community agencies; coordinates operations for juvenile drug cases and under‑age drinking enforcement; assists other divisions in juvenile matters; teaches “The Parent Project” class; serves on the Baldwin County Community Alliance; meets with troubled teens and parents; guides them to appropriate community resources. Narcotics Investigator: Investigates the sales, use, and/or manufacturing of illegal narcotics; maintains contact with confidential informants; conducts surveillance on narcotics suspects. School Resource Officer: Provides a safe school setting by enforcing laws on all criminal activity arriving from or reported by local schools; handles custody issues, criminal mischief, harassment, assault, and rape; assists principal and school staff in maintaining order during break, lunch, and class changes; provides police presence at extracurricular activities; serves as a link between the Police Department, schools, and community; serves on the board for the Alabama School Resource Officers Association. Canine Handler: Trains, prepares, and deploys a service dog to track and apprehend individuals sought by Police, search buildings and/or areas for suspected criminals, locate abandoned or hidden evidence, search and rescue lost or missing persons, detect illegal drugs, and provide handler protection; when off duty maintains dog grooming, feeding, exercise, medical care, transport to veterinary care, and continues training. Community Resource Officer: Develops and implements crime‑prevention, safety, and community‑relations programs; coordinates public meetings and special events; writes program policies and training manuals; designs, writes, and produces brochures and visual aids; provides training and instruction to other agencies on community outreach; communicates with the public, media, community, church, civic organizations, and officials; plans, organizes, and directs activities of VIPS and Police Explorer Post; supervises and evaluates volunteer personnel; prioritizes work. SWAT Member: Attends scheduled training; maintains physical fitness and firearms proficiency above basic standard; understands tactical concepts and works in a team; contributes to overall functioning of the team; operates under higher risk situations. Field Training Officer: Supports growth of new officers and integrates both new and experienced recruits; provides training in legal and procedural subjects; monitors trainee performance; offers clear feedback; coordinates with supervisors and command staff. Public Safety Diver: Attends required training; maintains equipment; works in aquatic environments under potential hazards; may be assigned supervisory roles. Accreditation and Standards Officer: Develops and implements crime‑prevention, safety, and community‑relations programs; writes policies and training manuals; communicates with public and internal units; reviews Use of Force documentation; conducts internal investigations; receives and routes officer complaints and compliments. CALEA Manager: Oversees review, update, and creation of written directives or policies to meet CALEA standards; manages the repository of required documents; informs Lexipol and CALEA of updates; schedules mandatory reports; maintains policies and procedures; publishes Daily Training Bulletins.
