Special Educational Teacher, St. John XXIII School, Port Washington, WI Position Summary: A Special Education Teacher supports classroom teachers in providing instructional and behavioral assistance to students with disabilities. Assist with instructional support and classroom management for assigned students. Interact with immediate supervisor, teachers, and parents, as assigned by the principal. Assist the teacher by providing students with individual support in grades 1st-8th. Provide students with instructional reinforcement and de-escalation strategies. Monitor nonacademic settings upon request for activities like lunchroom supervision, morning arrival of students, and the chaperoning of field trips. CPR Certified Position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend over/crouch, and sit for extended periods; the ability to use hands, speak, and hear. Special Education Teacher General Duties and Responsibilities Assisting and Modifying Instruction : Helping the lead teacher implement lesson plans and adapt materials for students' individual needs. This might involve one-on-one support, small group instruction, or facilitating classroom activities. Behavioral Support : Assisting with behavior management, implementing strategies to help students stay focused, and ensuring a positive learning environment. Monitoring Progress: Observing and recording students' progress, providing feedback to the teacher, and helping with assessments. Communication: Collaborating with teachers, therapists, and other staff members, as well as maintaining communication with parents or guardians regarding students' progress. Classroom Management: Assisting in maintaining an organized, safe, and inclusive classroom environment. Supporting Inclusion: Encouraging and facilitating the inclusion of students with disabilities in general education settings when appropriate. This role requires patience, empathy, strong organizational skills, and the ability to adapt to the varying needs of students. Exhibits a thorough understanding of classroom materials and instructional methods. Displays computer skills as well as a familiarity with audio-visual equipment. Since assistants/teachers will be working with students from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, the teacher must provide students with accurate and fair information and guidance. Assess the progress of students by observing their performance and recording relevant data. Attends to students who speak English as a second language. Meets accepted standards of professional behavior. Exhibits professionalism and commitment through punctuality and attendance. Observes all policies and procedures as established by the administration. Assists the teacher in the development of materials, projects, and activities to use with teacher-directed lessons. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Works with the teacher to establish and maintain open and positive lines of communication with students, other staff, and parents concerning academics, language, and behavior. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members. Assists the teacher/administrator in upholding and enforcing school rules and policies. Accepts other duties as assigned by Classroom Teacher(s) or Principal.
