Salary: $25.88 - $31.45 Hourly Location : CUSD District Office, 6225 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA Job Type: Part Time, 10 Months Job Number: 26-9347B Department: School Site Opening Date: 05/26/2026 Closing Date: Continuous Position Details This is an open recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacant positions for the 2026 - 2027 school year. The eligibility list will alsobe used to fill any vacancies which may occur within a period of one year, or until depleted. Positions in this classification typicallywork 7 hours per day. The recruitment process will consist of a written examination and a structured interview. BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned administrator and in coordination with the District Nurse and Certificated Staff, provides a variety of specialized, health, and physical care services in the classroom to medically fragile students with severe physical disabilities and/or life threatening health conditions; for the purpose/s of meeting the individual health needs of students, to comply with health care plans directed by physicians. Essential Duties and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Perform specialized health care procedures in accordance with established standards of practice, including, but not limited to, catheterization, gastrostomy tube feedings, ostomy care, tracheostomy care, suctioning, ventilator, respiratory inhaler, nebulizer treatments, monitors insulin dosages and blood sugar levels; administers chest percussion, oxygen administration, vital sign monitoring etc. This may include administering prescribed rectal Diastat. Provides a variety of minor health care procedures and personal hygiene services such as bandaging, taking temperatures, blood pressure readings, cleaning catheters, changing ostomy/colostomy bags, toileting, diapering, changing soiled clothing, cleaning and grooming; assists students in walking; and assists students with feeding activities. Assists in physically positioning, transferring, and/or lifting students as required; lifts, turns, and moves students from place to place. Support certificated staff by assisting students with physical therapy, developing motor skills, positioning and related exercises, utilizing adaptive equipment, and developing independent walking and mobility skills; assist and interact with students during physical education activities. Assists assigned students with medications and treatments according to physician orders, Individual Specialized Health Plan (IHSP) and under the direction of the credentialed school nurse. Monitor students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments such as outdoor activities, recess, eating, field trips, job site visits and various other activities for the purpose of evaluating students' health condition and/or assisting with immediate medical needs. Document procedures, medications, changes regarding student's condition, student progress, ISHP, IEP goals and responses to procedures on required logs for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information. Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records (e.g., student health information, student care plans, medication logs and information, emergency cards, emergency health care plans, informational pamphlets, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements. Administers first aid and CPR according to established procedures, initiates emergency procedures related to seizure disorders and allergic reactions as needed. Assist with the implementation of student health care procedures and protocol, as assessment of classroom environments for safety and hygiene. Communicates regularly with the district nurse, health technician, teacher, and site administrator on medical conditions of assigned students, reporting any student health concerns to supervising school nurse. Assist certificated staff in the implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and related goals and objectives, providing support to students with meeting IEP goals and objectives, monitoring student progress, and adapting, accommodating, and modifying classroom and homework assignments to meet individual student needs and reinforce learning activities. OTHER DUTIES: May assist in providing mandated student screenings. Serve as backup in the Health Office as needed. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE OF: Basic nursing concepts and patient care related subjects. Signs and symptoms of childhood and/or adolescent illnesses. General concepts of child development and characteristics of children with special needs. Universal health precautions and proper techniques for handling and disposing of hazardous materials. Proper use and care of medical materials, supplies and equipment. Problems and concerns of students with special needs. Safe practices in classroom activities. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Record-keeping and filing techniques. First aid and CPR procedures. ABILITY TO: Take initiative in beginning tasks and following them through to completion. Use critical thinking and innovation to solve problems. Handle stressful situations with tact and professionalism. Work interactively as a team member. Adapt to a variety of situations and environments. Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward special education students. Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software. Lift and carry students as assigned by position. Demonstrate ability to be dependable. Provide skilled vocational nursing skills. Provide specialized health care procedures and services. Administer injections/medications with skill. Evaluate and assess student illness or emergency medical situations. Operate a variety of specialized medical equipment. Entrance Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or recognized equivalent, supplemented by course work necessary to fulfill the Licensed Vocational Nurse requirement and any combination of one year of work experience providing health care in a special education class, nursing facility, clinic or hospital. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: California License of Vocational Nursing (LVN) Valid First Aid certification. Valid Cardio/Pulmonary (CPR) certification. Valid Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification. Selection Process/Additional Information Candidates who meet the minimum requirements, as demonstrated in their application materials, will be required to successfully complete a competitive testing process to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, which may consist of a written examination, a training and experience evaluation, a performance examination, and/or structured oral interviews. The candidates achieving the top three ranks of the appropriate eligibility list will be referred for a final selection interview. The Eligibility List resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no Eligibility List exists (Ed Code 45272). Step increases occur annually until Step 5 is reached, after which longevity steps are allocated in accordance with years of service. Benefits: Employees working 4 hours per day or more will be provided an option of Anthem Blue Cross HMO or Kaiser health benefits, as well as Delta Dental and EyeMed Vision benefits; employee contribution amounts are shared with the District and vary depending on number of hours worked per day. (Employees may opt out of medical, dental and vision insurance but may require to provide proof of other health coverage.) The district also pays into a life insurance policy for all employees who work at least 4 hours per day. Additional options for life insurance and disability insurance are available. Vacation: New employees earn vacation time on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year. Employees with years of longevity may earn up to 25 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year. Holidays: Employees are allocated up to 15 scheduled holidays and 2 floating holidays per year; holidays are prorated based on months worked per year. Sick and Personal Necessity: Employees earn sick leave on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of sick time per year. Employees may use up to 7 days of their sick leave balance each year for personal necessity purposes. Retirement: Retirement: Employees working 4 or more hours per day and those already contributing to CalPERS will be automatically enrolled into CalPERS upon hire. The District's CalPERS formula is 2% at 55 for employees enrolled with CalPERS prior to 12/31/2012 and 2% at 62 for employees who have already or will enroll into CalPERS as of 01/01/2013 or afterward. Employees working less than 4 hours per day will be included in an alternative retirement plan based on the use of pretax contributions.
