Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
The purpose of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is to provide support to school site operations with specific responsibilities for administering first aid and dispensing prescribed medications under the direction of a licensed healthcare provider; implement student individualized health care plans; coordinate with other personnel to support the health needs of students; document activities in accordance with established guidelines and/or regulatory requirements; provide general clerical support; convey medically related information to appropriate parties.
This job reports to an assigned administrator.
Administers first aid and dispenses medication as prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider (e.g., prescription medication, over the counter medication and/or vitamins, epi-pen, inhalers, nebulizers, etc.) to students for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, injured, and/or medically fragile children and/or meeting immediate health care needs within established guidelines.
Assesses and monitors students (e.g., students referred for illness and/or injury, medically fragile students, assigned one-on-one students, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student welfare and referring to a licensed healthcare provider for review and/or services.
Assists credentialed School Nurses with planning and coordinating mandated screenings (e.g., vision, dental, hearing, back/scoliosis screenings, etc.) for the purpose of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children.
Attends meetings, workshops, and/or in-service training for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
Collaborates with a variety of internal and external parties for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions, providing support for assigned services, and providing information.
Coordinates with supervisor for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the workforce, providing assistance with administrative functions, and assisting in the achievement of department, program, and district goals.
Greets and assists individuals (e.g., visitors, parents, students, vendors, staff, teachers, etc.) for the purpose of responding to inquiries and/or directing individuals to appropriate locations in accordance with established building security procedures.
Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records (e.g., student health information, student care plans, medication logs and information, emergency cards, emergency health care plans, informational pamphlets, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
Maintains health office work areas (e.g., cleans and sanitizes sinks, counters, tables, chairs, etc.) for the purpose of providing a sanitary environment.
Orders and maintains inventory of supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items.
Performs general clerical functions (e.g., answers telephones, performs data entry, files, copies, faxes, scans, etc.) for the purpose of supporting health services activities in a timely and efficient manner.
Performs specialized health care in accordance with specific medical orders (e.g., catheterizes students, tube feeds students, provides assistance with diapering/toileting, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for medically fragile students and meeting immediate health care needs within established guidelines.
Prepares a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, reports, and records (e.g., student records, standardized/special reports, correspondence, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing reference, conveying information, and complying with established administrative requirements.
Prepares and transports health supplies including emergency care plans, first aid materials, and emergency medications as needed during evacuation drills, field trips, and off-site excursions, etc. for the purpose of providing prescribed care for students within established guidelines.
Responds to a variety of inquiries regarding various procedures and requirements for the purpose of providing information, recommending or implementing a plan of action, and/or resolving issues.
Verifies immunization records for enrolled and enrolling students for the purpose of complying with law and established guidelines.
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Verifies identity of visitors to the health office for the purpose of maintaining a secure environment and restricting access to confidential information and/or student to authorized persons within established guidelines.
Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
adhering to safety practices;
administering first aid and/or dispensing medications in accordance with established guidelines;
applying job-related codes, regulations and laws;
handling hazardous materials;
operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications and office technology;
performing nursing procedures within the scope of a licensed vocational nurse as prescribed (e.g., catheterization, tube feeding, tracheostomy, etc.);
preparing and maintaining accurate records;
using Microsoft Office software applications and Google based platforms.
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Job related experience is required.
