Associate EHS Manager

Associate Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager Overview We have an opportunity for a passionate professional to shape and execute safety, health, and environmental compliance across our sites. The role focuses on ensuring worker safety, environmental stewardship, and ISO certification while supporting operational teams. Key Responsibilities Support location’s safety and environmental programs aligning with regulatory, compliance, and company standards. Maintain Environmental Management System (EMS) and Smithfield Injury Prevention System (SIPS); contribute to internal EHS audits for timely findings resolution. Ensure adherence to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, coordinate certification efforts, and track issue resolution. Collect and analyze Key Performance Indicators for EHS, including OSHA/environmental violations, incident rates, employee turnover, and workers’ compensation claims. Implement strategies to reduce workers’ compensation costs, absenteeism, and turnover. Assist with Process Safety Management and Risk Management Plan requirements for ammonia refrigeration systems. Ensure required training is conducted; train production employees and management on OSHA, environmental regulations, SOPs, and emergency response protocols. Conduct incident investigations, identify corrective actions, and manage employee exposure surveys. Drive a positive employee experience through coaching, development, and a culture of continuous improvement. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in environmental, health and safety or related field and 3+ years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience leading training, coaching, or mentoring; managing processes or projects. Ability to handle multiple assignments, set goals, and meet commitments on schedule. Comfortable with occasional long hours, weekends, and on‑call status. Strong decision‑making skills in stressful situations, including emergency response. Occasional travel. Desired Skills Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations, Process Safety Management for ammonia refrigeration, workers’ compensation processes, incident investigation. Knowledge of air, water, waste permitting for industrial plant settings. Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and company software. Strong oral and written communication in English for reports and procedures. Basic math skills for KPI management. Team‑oriented, respectful, and able to work independently with strong organization. Physical Demands & Work Environment The plant environment includes wet or humid conditions, extreme cold and heat, moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals. Noise is typically moderate but can be loud in production areas. Tasks may involve lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, using stairs, ladder climbing, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Work may alternate shifts and include some weekends. Ability to deliver information to diverse audiences and perform fundamental mathematical tasks.
