Mechanic

Assure that all transportation department vehicles operate in a safe and efficient manner and that routine preventive maintenance is performed in order to maximize vehicle life.

Educational Qualifications

• Knowledge in the field of gasoline and diesel engine repairs
• Valid Texas Driver's License
• Valid Class A or B Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsement P and S, and must attain within 180 days of employment
• ASE certification preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Must have thorough knowledge of automobile and truck functions, air-conditioning systems, welding, transmissions, drive lines, brake systems, and of all operating functions of school buses.

2. Must have thorough knowledge of motor vehicle laws and of U.I.S.D. policies and procedures.

3. Maintain the school district's motor vehicles as assigned, such as buses, trucks, cars, and trailers, etc.

4. Wash school buses and other vehicles when needed.

5. Notify the immediate supervisor immediately of any mechanical condition, which is dangerous to the operation of the vehicle.

6. Observe safety standards in performing their duties.

7. Keep abreast of new techniques and attend workshops.

8. Must respond to calls after regular hours and on weekends as needed.

9. Assist in driving a bus route if needed.

10. Instruct and supervise Mechanic Assistant.

11. Enforce all district policies and guidelines.

12. Must have excellent work habits and be able to follow oral and written instructions.

13. Must meet all the criteria set for bus drivers in relation to being able to drive buses. (Clean driving record, training, etc.) 14. Must be able to work independently and make responsible decisions in emergency situations.

15. Must be able to use all tools relevant to the performance of varied vehicle repairs.

16. Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing during regular business hours to confer with district personnel.

17. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job responsibility unless instructed to work from home by supervisor.

18. Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

Distance Learning and Virtual Instruction Duties and Responsibilities In the event of a school closure in response to a disaster, flood, extreme weather condition, fuel curtailment, epidemic, pandemic or other calamity, the following duties and responsibilities will be added to the above listed Major Job Responsibilities and Duties, as directed by the Superintendent.

19. Usage of personal equipment, including but not limited to personal cellular phone, personal computer, and personal internet service when working from home during a District closure due to government or Board order or during an emergency affecting normal District operations.

20. Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives.

Working Conditions

Stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, walking and standing. Work outside and inside; exposure to heat, dampness and humidity; exposure to road hazardous. Continual sitting, reaching and repetitive hand and arm motions. Ability to operate motor vehicle. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures (hot) and vehicle fumes.

Distance Learning Working Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer; use of and access to phone system; video/instructional equipment; and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting

Motion: Repetitive computer work with frequent use of hands and wrists

Environment: Work from inside home or location other than school building

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours.

Minimum Salary: $20.00 / hour
