Location: Newport News, Virginia

Per Diem: $140 per day

Contract: 1-year term with an option to extend for an additional year and potential conversion to full-time employment

A day in this role

You start your shift by reviewing ventilation assembly drawings and blueprints, confirming material types and weld symbols before laying out parts. You mark fractional and decimal dimensions with confidence, shear and form components in the shop, and then head aboard to install foundations, bulkheads, and shipboard furniture. Your focus is steady: assemble precisely to specification, maintain quality, and work safely in a physically demanding environment. Throughout the day, you operate hand and shop equipment, and you keep OSHA shipbuilding standards top of mind.

Core background

Minimum of three years as a first-class Sheet Metal Worker specifically installing foundations, ventilation systems, bulkheads, shipboard furniture, and performing sheet metal fabrication shop work
Marine experience preferred; aircraft, industrial, or commercial sheet metal backgrounds are also acceptable

What you’ll handle routinely

Read and interpret complex ventilation assembly drawings, blueprints, sketches, and symbols (including weld symbols, material callouts, datum and reference lines)
Work confidently with fractional and decimal measurements using standard rulers and measuring tools
Lay out piece parts for fabrication and for final assembly
Assemble parts to exact specifications with consistent quality
Operate effectively in a physically demanding shipyard environment
Apply OSHA regulations relevant to the shipbuilding industry
Use small hand tools (electric drills, grinders, rivet guns) and shop machinery (drill press, press brake, shears, etc.)
