Our department is at the center of a Catholic university whose mission is inspired and guided by the traditions of the Society of Jesus, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, and the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary. We therefore encourage an integration of knowledge in which “faith and reason bear witness to the unity of all truth” (*Ex Corde Ecclesiae*, §17) Teaching philosophy at LMU is at its core a vocation devoted to love of the truth in all its fullness. It is a way of being a person for others, more specifically, for students, by putting oneself at their service by exemplifying the love of wisdom and thereby enkindling in them a love of all that is good, true, and beautiful. This teaching vocation calls for a serious philosophical formation (normally satisfied by a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related discipline), demonstrated teaching excellence, and the desire to live a life of intellectual friendship with our colleagues and students in the light of the Catholic intellectual tradition.
