Plant Operator II - Water/Wastewater

Salary : $57,012.80 annually USD Job Description Under general supervision, performs responsible technical work in the operation of a water or sewer treatment plant on an assigned shift. Is responsible for performing plant operation and maintenance duties in a professional manner consistent with standard operating practices to meet State, Federal, and environmental regulations. Reports to Superintendent of Operations. Responsibilities Inspect plant equipment and machinery to ensure proper operation. Take water or sewage samples at various stages, perform routine laboratory analyses, and record results. Adjust treatment plant equipment (chlorinators, lime shakers, flocculators, digesters, sludge collectors, sand filters, chemical feeders, vacuum filters, conveyor systems, screens, and related equipment) based on sample results and monitoring information. Inspect recording charts and meters, making adjustments to controls in conformance with operating instructions. Service a variety of plant equipment and machinery; clean and paint equipment; assist mechanics with major repairs and installation work. Perform general building maintenance and custodial work. Instruct new operators in plant procedures and operations; keep records and prepare periodic summary reports of operations. Carry out physical tests (turbidity, color, odor, taste, temperature) and chemical tests (pH, alkalinity, CO₂, hardness, metal content, residual chlorine, fluoride); conduct bacterial tests (chloroform bacteria, plate count). Cleans and maintains bar screens. Maintain sufficient supplies of chemicals (chlorine, aluminum, Calgon, lime, carbon, sodium chloride, etc.). Monitor control panel charts and pressure gauges. Answer emergency phone calls and respond to service reconnections, dispatching appropriate personnel. Operate motorized equipment (bobcat, backhoe, vacuum truck) used in the sewage treatment process. Assign daily laboratory, sampling, and maintenance requirements to shift operators. Report immediately any serious plant breakdown or condition that may cause inefficient or unsafe operation or discharge. Maintain an operation and maintenance log for the treatment plants. Submit accurate reports of plant operation, sampling, lab analysis daily and monthly operating reports as required by Florida Administrative Code, EPA, and NPDES permits. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or equivalent vocational training. At least 2 years of experience operating electrical and mechanical machinery similar to that used in a water and sewer treatment plant, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Certifications and Licenses Class “B” water or wastewater plant operators license from the Florida Department of Professional Regulation. Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record (not suspended within last five years). Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement may be required.
