Plant Operator

Job Summary Under the supervision of a specified departmental supervisor, operates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge and effluent. The incumbent observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and test results to determine processing requirements. Work is reviewed through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and work progress. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Monitors, adjusts and records data from gauges, meters, control panel and equipment to ensure proper chemical treatment, pressures and flow rates of the water/wastewater system. Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge readings. Extracts samples and performs routine laboratory tests and analyses. Inspects and cleans, if necessary, mechanical equipment in a waste/wastewater treatment plant. Performs routine troubleshooting on process equipment. Effectively and positively represents the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation, or belief, or sexual orientation. Establishes and maintains effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers. Performs related work as required. Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by two (2) years of experience in the field of wastewater treatment or a related area. Must possess the ability to obtain a Florida certification class “C” license at the first available opportunity. Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid Driver’s License with proof of automobile insurance. Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record. Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of basic water/wastewater treatment methods and procedures, sanitary characteristics of water/wastewater and chemicals used in the treatment process. Knowledge of plant safety precautions. Skill in the use of a variety of treatment plant equipment including pumps, measuring instruments, valves and laboratory equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to gather and maintain complete and accurate records. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public. Physical Demands Regularly required to conduct sedentary work, light work, medium work, climb, crouch, feel, grasp, handle, hear, kneel, make rational decisions, reach, and talk. Work Environment Work involves light to moderate physical activity in indoor and outdoor settings under all types of weather conditions with exposure to insects, animals and other hazards.
