Assistant Professor of Communication

Position Announcement The Department of Communication at Utah Tech University (UT) in St.George, Utah, is seeking one creative and passionateteacher/scholar for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professorof Communication, with an emphasis in Leadership and OrganizationalCommunication, to begin Fall 2027 semester. The position requires a4/4 teaching load per academic year, and the successful candidateswill be expected to teach courses related to student leadership,organizational communication, and/or professionalcommunication. We invite applicants who teach and develop research on leadershipand organizational communication across theoretical andparadigmatic approaches (qualitative, critical, quantitative), withinterest areas in including, but not limited to, compassionateleadership, student-led organizing, community leadership andorganizing, organizational support, ethics in leadership, publicrelations, strategic communication (across local/globalcontexts), and organizational justice and activism. Special consideration will be given to the applicant with a strongcommitment to student mentorship and success. Special considerationwill also be given to the applicant with a with a desire toreinvigorate the department’s current curriculum and design newcourses related to the candidate’s specialty area(s). The primaryconsideration for tenure at UT is teaching, with expectations ofuniversity- and college-level service beginning at the second yearof employment. Maintaining an active research trajectory is highlydesired. Course assignments include Leadershipand Performance Teams, Organizational Communication and SystemDynamics, Professional Relationships, Persuasion, and Ethics inCommunication as well as introductory communication courses withinthe department curriculum. Provide regular institutional service as outlined in Regent andUniversity policy. Consult with department chair and college dean in creating andproposing new curriculum. Work with other faculty in program management, includingfurthering development and campus promotion of the Communicationfield, department, and programs. Adhere to department, college, and university policies andperform campus-wide faculty responsibilities. Develop and maintain a scholarship agenda in area of expertisethat is appropriate to a teaching university like Utah Tech. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication or related field required. A specialtythat addresses the intersection of leadership and organizationalcommunication is highly desired. ABD may be considered ifcompletion of degree will occur by July 1, 2027. Have experience teaching and/or designing courses related toorganizational communication, professional communication,leadership, and other core communication classes such ascommunication theory and research. Demonstrate excellence or potential in instructingcollege-level courses, utilizing a variety of teaching techniquesand strategies. Demonstrate willingness to participate in college anddepartmental student recruitment and retention initiatives. Have experience in curriculum development. Ability to collaborate in a collegial, team-orientedworkplace. Preferred Qualifications: Sufficient experience in teaching, and working with, studentswith diverse educational and socioeconomic backgrounds. Demonstrate willingness to integrate active learning and otherinnovative pedagogical approaches in the classroom (see theUniversity’s “active learning, active life” mission online). Prior experience serving on committees or participating inservice-related activities. Research trajectory or agenda that would enhance departmentalor university recognition via representation in journals and/or atconferences. Previous online teaching experience and/or using onlinelearning platforms. Position Details, Compensation and Benefits Full-time(9-month) professional-track faculty position. Faculty service, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2027. Annual salary of $58,000 with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
