Description:
Phlebotomists collect blood specimens from outpatients while adhering to established protocols to ensure proper sample collection and patient safety.
They transport blood specimens to laboratory departments according to proper procedures for transport and handling.
In addition, they conduct education programs related to theories and techniques of phlebotomy.
Phlebotomists perform related clerical work.
Duties include collecting blood specimens through venipuncture, capillary puncture, and/or incision techniques.
They provide phlebotomy services to patients following physician orders.
Data concerning blood specimens is entered into a computer database.
They maintain appointment schedules and log patients seen and tests obtained.
Results of patient tests are recorded and filed appropriately.
Work-related statistics are kept, and related clerical duties are performed.
Phlebotomists supervise, teach, and support medical technology students in theories and techniques of phlebotomy.
They ensure adherence to established protocols and procedures for proper sample collection and patient safety.
Attendance and presentation at related education programs are required.
They maintain an inventory of supplies needed for daily blood specimen collection.
Phlebotomists participate in the overall function of the laboratory by assuming occasional substitutions to other shifts or working prolonged shifts.
Other related duties may be required or directed.
