Step into the workday
You begin by opening a fresh set of marine drawings—line by line, you interpret blueprints and layout specifications to understand how the hull sections and frames will come together. On the deck, you mark out measurements, bring steel components into alignment, and carefully assemble sections that will become ships, barges, and other marine vessels.
As the structure takes shape, you prepare each piece for welding—measuring, cutting, grinding, and tacking metal so the welders can make permanent, precise seams. Throughout the day you rely on your toolkit—hand and power tools, cutting torches, grinders, and standard shipyard equipment—to get each part fitted right the first time.
What you’ll do- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and layout specifications.
- Fit, align, and assemble structural components for ships, barges, and marine vessels.
- Measure, cut, grind, and tack metal to prepare components for welding.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, grinders, and other shipyard equipment.
