Assistant Attorney General (Insurance)

Overview The Revenue & Regulatory Law (R&R) section of the Colorado Department of Law seeks an experienced attorney to serve in its Insurance Unit. The unit advises and represents the Colorado Division of Insurance and its Commissioner on a wide range of insurance‑related legal matters, including healthcare, corporate, administrative, tax, and constitutional law issues. Responsibilities Represent the Commissioner and the Division in litigation, primarily in administrative hearings and at the Office of Administrative Courts, but also in federal and state district and appellate courts. Cases involve various types of insurance, including health, long‑term care, life, property and casualty, bail, and immigration bonding. Provide general counsel assistance in drafting and promulgating Division regulations, ensuring legal compliance, conducting financial and market conduct examinations, reviewing proposed legislation, overseeing Colorado sunshine laws, and managing the rehabilitation and liquidation of insurance companies. Assist other attorneys in the unit and the R&R Section on an as‑needed basis. Qualifications Qualified applicants must be admitted to the Colorado Bar or be eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar, with proof of pending admission required if applicable. Desired experience includes: Substantive legal training, including clerkships or fellowships. Experience as a prosecutor or litigator. Background in insurance law and/or administrative law. Strong client‑relationship skills, passion for litigation and general counsel work, and commitment to public service. Salary and Compensation Salary will be set commensurate with qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Pay is on a biweekly basis.

• Assistant Attorney General I (≤3 years experience): $88,197 – $96,554 annually.
• Assistant Attorney General II (>3 years experience): $102,099 – $136,468 annually.

Conditions of Employment Thorough background investigation required prior to appointment. Flexible work arrangements are offered; attorneys typically work in‑office at least one day per week. Colorado Department of Law participates in E‑Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I‑9 information to confirm work authorization. Writing Sample Requirement Applicants must submit at least one writing sample that demonstrates the ability to provide sound legal advice. The sample should be original work, include a brief description of the issue, and note any feedback received.
