The State Office of African American Affairs (OAAA) is charged with studying, identifying and providing possible solutions to issues of concern that is relevant to the African American Community. The New Mexico OAAA recognizes the need for targeted intervention strategies that address the produce sustained results. To that end, New Mexico OAAA endeavors to establish approaches that will strengthen collaborative networks that sustain on-going advocacy in the following focus areas: Advocacy and Policy, Community Development, Economic Development, Education Advancement, and Health Awareness.Why does the job exist? The Education Advancement Coordinator position exists to advance educational equity, opportunity, and achievement for Black/African American communities throughout New Mexico. This position focuses on developing, coordinating, and implementing impactful educational programs, initiatives, and partnerships that address disparities in literacy, academic achievement, college and career readiness, mentorship, family engagement, and access to educational resources. The position will work to strengthen pathways for youth, students, families, educators, and community members by developing innovative strategies and sustainable programs that positively impact educational outcomes statewide. In addition, the position will support the broader mission of the Office of African American Affairs (OAAA) through collaboration across focus areas including Economic Empowerment, Health Equity, Community Development, and Advocacy & Policy.
How does it get done? Duties of this position include:
* Develop, coordinate, and implement education-focused programs, workshops, initiatives, and community engagement efforts statewide.
* Build strategic partnerships with schools, school districts, higher education institutions, literacy organizations, nonprofits, educators, scholars, government agencies, and community stakeholders.
* Develop initiatives aimed at addressing educational disparities impacting Black/African American students and families.
* Coordinate literacy initiatives, academic enrichment programs, mentorship opportunities, college and career readiness efforts, and educational resource distribution.
* Conduct presentations, trainings, workshops, and outreach activities related to education advancement and community empowerment.
* Attend and participate in education-related meetings, conferences, community events, and statewide collaborations.
* Research educational trends, barriers, and best practices to help inform programming and strategic initiatives.
* Assist in the development of educational materials, curriculum resources, reports, and community engagement tools.
* Develop strategies to increase community awareness, engagement, and access to educational opportunities and resources.
*Collaborate with local and state government agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations to strengthen outcomes for Black/African American communities.
* Support statewide programming and special initiatives aligned with the mission and goals of OAAA.
Who are the customers? This position serves Black/African American students, families, educators, scholars, community organizations, schools, and underserved communities throughout New Mexico. The work is centered on improving educational outcomes, increasing access to opportunity, strengthening community engagement, and helping create equitable pathways to long-term success.
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have experience in: * Educational outreach, program development, and community engagement
* Literacy initiatives and/or academic enrichment programming
* College and career readiness initiatives
* Working with K-12 schools, higher education institutions, or educational nonprofits
* Conducting workshops, presentations, and trainings
* Creating educational materials and community resources
* Building partnerships with educators, community leaders, organizations, and government agencies
* Developing and managing community-based programs and initiatives The ideal candidate will have the following skills: * Passion for educational equity and community empowerment
* Strong understanding of challenges impacting underserved and underrepresented communities
* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
* Strong program development and organizational skills
* Ability to build and maintain collaborative partnerships
* Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
* Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
* Ability to travel statewide to support program and community needs
Minimum Qualification Associate's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Education, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Family Studies/Services, Social Sciences, or Human Services and one (1) year of experience as a social work assistant and/or in social or community coordination, working with communities, working on health or social service related matters, social work/case management experience, and/or behavioral health care. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling three (3) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions Work is performed both in an office and out in the community with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage. This position will also require occasional lifting up to 50 pounds or less. This position is required to travel and work non-traditional hours due to programming.
