The Exceptional Children Spanish Interpreter & Parent Liaison ensures that parents understand the special education process, their rights, and the services available to their children while providing accurate interpretation and translation services. This position also coordinates parent outreach, training, and community partnerships to strengthen relationships between families, schools, and the Exceptional Children Department. Key Duties and Responsibilities Interpretation and Translation: Provides accurate oral interpretation between English and Spanish during: Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings Eligibility meetings Evaluation and assessment conferences Manifestation Determination Reviews Parent conferences related to Exceptional Children services Translates special education documents, including: Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Prior Written Notices Evaluation reportsConsent forms Progress reports Meeting notices Parent communications District documents related to Exceptional Children services Ensures all translations are accurate, culturally appropriate, and legally compliant. Parent Engagement and Family Support: Serves as the primary point of contact for families seeking assistance from the Exceptional Children Department. Assists parents in understanding special education processes, procedural safeguards, and available district resources. Supports communication between families, schools, and district staff to ensure positive partnerships. Coordinates and facilitates parent trainings, informational sessions, and family engagement events. Assists with the Parent Stakeholder Team and other parent support initiatives Connects families with community agencies and resources that support students with disabilities. Provides culturally responsive support that encourages active family participation in educational planning. Collaboration: Collaborates with school administrators, case managers, teachers, psychologists, related service providers, and district staff to support students with disabilities. Works closely with the Director of School Relations and other district departments to strengthen family communication. Assists the Executive Director of Exceptional Children in identifying trends, gathering parent feedback, and analyzing family engagement data. Participates in district and state professional development related to language access, special education, cultural competency, and family engagement. Confidentiality and Compliance: Maintains strict confidentiality regarding student records and family information in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, HIPAA, and district policies. Demonstrates professionalism, neutrality, and objectivity during meetings involving sensitive or confidential information. Maintains knowledge of current federal, state, and local special education laws and regulations. Other Duties: Travels between district schools and community locations as needed. May require occasional evening meetings to accommodate parent schedules. Completes other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Exceptional Children. Qualifications Minimum High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree preferred. Fluency in English and Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing). Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in public schools or a related educational setting. Experience working with students with disabilities and their families. Minimum of three (3) years of experience collaborating with diverse population. Valid North Carolina driver's license with the ability to travel throughout the district. Preferred Bachelor's degree. Experience interpreting and translating in educational or special education settings. Knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504, and FERPA. Experience with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Experience planning and facilitating parent engagement opportunities. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity when working with diverse populations. Ability to interpret complex educational and legal terminology accurately. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Effective problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff, families, and community partners. Demonstrates leadership in supporting equitable access and meaningful family engagement.
