Trainer Adjunct – Welding Workforce Training and Continuing Education WTCE Adjunct Trainers are professional educators who work on a limited basis and have the primary responsibility of fulfilling Texas Southmost College’s mission, vision, values, and goals of providing a quality education for all students enrolled at the College. The relationship of the adjunct Trainer member to the student is one of leader, teacher, advisor, and facilitator of learning. Adjunct Trainers are responsible for teaching workforce‐related and continuing education classes and are hired on a part‑time basis contingent upon departmental needs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Teach program‑specific workforce training and continuing education courses. Develop curriculum for selected classes as needed. Collaborate with the Workforce Training and Continuing Education Director to develop continuing education schedules. Teach courses at a variety of times and locations, including evenings and weekends. Develop and utilize a course syllabus for each course following established instructional guidelines. Advise students in career and program matters. Provide timely, quality access to students through electronic communication or other appropriate methods. Strive for continual improvement of student success by planning an optimal learning environment, providing high‑quality instruction and advising, participating in the development of learning outcomes and assessment, and engaging in ongoing professional development. Manage learning environments by ensuring accurate syllabi that incorporate departmental, college, and instructor requirements; maintain attendance records, submit grades, and provide constructive feedback throughout the semester; conduct classes punctually and in accordance with the prescribed meeting schedule. Deliver effective instruction by assuming primary responsibility for curriculum development in conjunction with the College’s policies and procedures, ensuring rigor and quality of instruction; consider individual differences of students; use the College’s digital learning solution; communicate clearly to students the expectations concerning digital learning and other technologies. Enhance the student’s learning experience by integrating concrete, real‑life situations to encourage critical thinking, interdisciplinary skills, and teamwork; employ methods that develop student understanding of discipline‑specific thinking and practices, and apply them to academic literacy; work with students and employers in occupational settings as required. Collaborate with colleagues across the College in the construction and continuous improvement of measurable learning outcomes to include Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board core curriculum objectives and additional TSC objectives. Assess student learning by designing assessments that measure or demonstrate student growth; sequence learning opportunities throughout advising, courses, and programs to build understanding; align assessment with learning opportunities. Promote continual improvement by developing and revising curriculum and using defined student learning outcomes to plan, develop, document, and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching activities. Support TSC’s institutional effectiveness program by understanding SOAPs, completing all mandatory performance evaluation measures, sharing best practices, and striving toward improved educational effectiveness. Support learning through student engagement by creating a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, and trainer interaction. Maintain a learning‑centered environment by being available to students during the designated work period. Support student learning by making students aware of and referring them to appropriate student and academic support services. Pursue professional development by taking graduate courses or internal classes offered by the College or professional development organizations and maintaining required professional credentials, licensing, and continuing education hours. Participate collegially in discipline‑specific activities developed for adjunct Trainers. Attend the workplace regularly, report to work punctually, and follow a work schedule to meet demands (on‑campus or off‑site). Use interpersonal skills and sound judgment in completing duties between coworkers, supervisory chain, trainers, staff, students, and customers. Support the values and institutional goals as defined in the College’s Strategic Plan. Complete all required training and professional development sessions sponsored by the College. Work hours may include evenings, holidays, or weekends depending on deadline requirements and supporting institutional events. Perform duties and responsibilities in compliance with college standards, policies, and guidelines. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge and Skills Ability to repair, maintain and operate all machines and tools. Ability to climb a ladder to retrieve and replace materials and supplies. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in a diverse work environment. Willing and able to teach day, evening, or weekend classes at a number of sites around the city. Knowledge and skill in a variety of computer usage and software. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse professional, community, and student population. Good organizational and planning skills. Demonstrate sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities. Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate students in a learning‑centered environment; self‑disciplined and able to manage others effectively. Knowledge and proficiency in all welding disciplines (GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, FCAW/Flux Core ARC, SMAW, and WAT on plate and pipe). Knowledge of plasma and oxy‑acetylene cutting procedures. Proficiency in blueprint reading and pipefitting theory and its application. Thorough understanding and adherence to all industry safety standards and procedures associated with the above processes. Required Education and Experience Minimum of three (3) years related work experience in the field. Must complete a weld test to demonstrate proficiency. Preferred Education and Experience Bilingual in English/Spanish. Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification. American Welding Society (AWS) certification. Physical Demands Frequent standing; occasional walking, sitting, handling items, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, tasting or smelling. Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
