Official Job Title Plant Utilities Engineer 1 Job Information Job Number: 2504248 Field: Plant Utilities Engineer Department: HVAC Location: US-NY-Stony Brook Schedule: Full-time Night Shift (11:00pm – 7:30am) Pass Days: Thursday, Friday Position Summary A Plant Utilities Engineer 1 operates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates mechanical and electrical equipment for heating, hot water, ventilation, air‑conditioning, and electrical distribution. The incumbent also recommends major equipment overhauls and develops energy‑conservation projects. Responsibilities Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test, and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment. Make recommendations for major overhauls, replacements, and energy‑conservation projects. Supervise subordinate staff in the operation and maintenance of heating facilities and mechanical equipment. Supervise contractors in emergency or project situations and may assume responsibility for the overall physical plant. Perform additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Graduate of a U.S. Air Force heating, HVAC, ventilation, air‑conditioning, or refrigeration apprenticeship program. Enlisted machinery technician (MK) or Marine Engineer certificate issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army. Enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator, utilities man, machinist mate, or engine man with the U.S. Navy. Merchant mariner’s document (MMD) and qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer, or engine man with the U.S. Merchant Marine. Completion of a NYS Department of Labor apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC mechanic, or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC). Completion of a high‑pressure boiler operating engineer license or stationary engineer license. Associate’s degree in HVAC from an accredited college. Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering. Four or more years of full‑time hands‑on experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional facility HVAC/boiler maintenance, or in digital energy platforms and building analytics. Four or more years of full‑time hands‑on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems, boilers, or auxiliary equipment. Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900hours) or an approved HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, or plumbing certificate from an accredited technical school. Preferred Qualifications Valid NYS driver’s license. Experience in a hospital/healthcare setting. Additional Requirements Successful completion of a pre‑employment physical examination and medical clearance. Electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references. Successful completion of a 4‑panel drug screen. Meeting regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Provision of any required New York State license(s) or certificate(s). Pay Range Salary: $56,506 per year. Additional annual supplemental pay may include location pay ($4,000) and inconvenience pay/supplemental shift differential ($575).
