General Description TJJD provides residential treatment to youth committed to TJJD at state-operated high‑security juvenile correctional facilities. As a senior‑level supervisor, you will oversee assigned dorm’s youth development coaches, daily operations, programming, and culture, implementing the Texas Model of trauma‑informed corrections and leading team development. Dorm assignments are based on age and safety assessment. Responsibilities Understand and promote the vision, direction of the department and agency. Set staff performance goals aligned with agency mission, vision, and core values. Ensure staff understand duties or delegated tasks. Provide constructive feedback and coaching, reviewing cameras to highlight successes and areas for development. Train, supervise, and evaluate staff and senior coaches to provide coaching. Regularly review overhead and body‑worn cameras for safety, security, and Texas Model compliance. Ensure adherence to agency policy and promptly address youth and staff conduct. Participate in staff selection to fit dorm culture. Establish and maintain a positive dorm culture built on teamwork, coaching, and caring for youth. Foster trust‑building among co‑workers and resolve issues. Act as a calming agent during escalated situations. Communicate directives with authority. Ensure accurate and timely information dissemination to staff. Complete required trainings and ensure staff do the same. Maintain presence on the dorm and model TBRI principles. Demonstrate TBRI‑based playful engagement, healthy boundaries, and repairs with youth and staff. Provide oversight, coaching, and feedback on Texas Model engagement, activities, and interventions for all shifts. Plan, prioritize, and schedule dorm activities. Ensure daily schedule and activities, including nurture groups, are followed. Ensure weekly dorm leadership meetings with case managers, senior coaches, and psychologists. Provide technical assistance, training, and direction to coaches. Empower staff to practice TBRI principles of failing forward and felt safety. Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, policies, and safety standards related to dorm operations. Monitor staff behavior for unspoken needs, creating an environment of felt safety. Ensure youth service team meetings adhere to policy. Analyze and use data to support decisions and recommend program and staff improvements. Recognize and celebrate staff value through creative initiatives. Ensure effective shift change transitions with clear communication. Allow staff self‑regulation and provide time‑outs for emotional regulation. Conduct follow‑up visits after incidents to identify needs and provide support. Encourage creativity in group activities for regulation, life skills, and recreation. Lead team and youth to develop dorm identity, rituals, and celebrations fostering belonging. Approve/deny timesheets by deadlines to ensure timely staff pay. Ensure physical safety through prompt work order submission. Represent the dorm during staff and special meetings and provide relevant operational information. Act as liaison with facility programs and community agencies. Provide direct supervision during shortages or emergencies. Support, lead, and direct during facility crises. Work closely with service providers and treatment staff to ensure youth access to programs. Serve as campus shift administrator on a rotational basis. Work under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgment. May work >40 hours per week, on‑call, and travel occasionally. Promote Texas Model goals, coach staff toward treatment success, coordinate policy changes, and monitor training completion. Monitor and evaluate safety measures, ensuring proper headcounts, incident reporting, suicide risk screenings, contraband searches, and compliance. Coordinate transfers and transport of youth. Provide first aid during emergencies. Maintain duty hygiene and safety, collaborate with maintenance and risk management. Ensure compliance with PREA, TJJD Case Management Standards, and collaborate with compliance officers. Cooperate with program supervisors and facility administrators to meet objectives, share information, and recommend improvements. Animate youth service team meetings per policy, participate in staff and special meetings, and lobby for ideas. Perform all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures, reporting hazards. Embodiment and support of the Texas Model in daily interactions. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of full‑time wage‑earning experience in residential or correctional environments, including at least one year in a supervisory or senior‑level position. Experience may involve assessments, case planning, service coordination, references, and counseling. Alternatively, a high school diploma and six (6) years of full‑time wage‑earning experience in similar settings, with at least one year in a supervisory or senior‑level role. Required Valid driver’s license. Certified as a Texas Model Champion or ability to obtain certification within 6 months. Must become a TBRI Practitioner if selected for training. Experience providing services to juveniles in correctional or similar programs. Experience and Education Substitutions One year of appropriate experience may substitute for one year of college (30 course hours) on a year‑for‑year basis. Undergraduate course hours may substitute for up to four years of experience (30 hours per year). Graduate course hours may substitute for up to two years of experience (12 hours per year). Military supervisory experience at E‑5 or above may substitute for one year of supervisory experience. Experience may be satisfied by prorated part‑time equivalent. All substituted degrees or course hours must be from accredited institutions. Pre‑employment Conditions Fingerprinting, criminal records check, and driving record check. Fitness‑for‑Duty Assessment, including physical and behavioral evaluations. Requirements for Continued Employment Maintain certification in TJJD approved use of force techniques. Maintain certification in First Aid and CPR. Maintain a valid driver’s license. Failure to maintain licensure or certification results in termination. Knowledge of adolescent behavior, counseling, and guidance techniques. Knowledge of juvenile delinquency causes and current treatment methods. Knowledge of adult learning principles.
