Job Type: Officer of Administration Bargaining Unit: Regular/Temporary: Regular End Date if Temporary: Hours Per Week: 35 Standard Work Schedule: Building: Salary Range: $68,000 - $73,000 Position Summary The Department of Anesthesiology is seeking aBillingandCodingAssistant to serve as a key resource in the oversightandoptimization of professional feecodingandcompliance activities. Reporting to theCodingManager, this role is responsible for independently reviewing complex clinical documentation, interpretingcodingandpayer regulations,andensuring accurateandcompliant charge capture across multiple service lines. This position exercises independent judgment in the application ofcodingstandards, proactively identifies compliance risks,andpartners with providersandleadership to resolve documentationandcodingissues that impact regulatory adherenceandrevenue integrity. The individual in this role serves as a subject matter expertandplays a critical role in supporting departmental financialandcompliance objectives. Responsibilities Independently reviewandinterpret clinical documentation to ensure accurate, compliant,andcomplete charge capture across pain medicineandrelated specialties Apply advanced knowledge of ICD-10, CPT,andmodifier usage, including evaluationandmanagement, procedural,andbehavioral healthcoding Analyzeandinterpret governmentandcommercial payer policies; determine appropriatecodingapproaches in complex or ambiguous scenarios Identifycodingtrends, discrepancies,andpotential compliance risks; take appropriate action to resolve issuesandmitigate risk Serve as a subject matter expert for providersandstaff, providing guidance on documentation requirements,codingstandards,andregulatory changes Collaborate directly with physicians, advanced practice providers,andclinical staff to resolve complex documentation issuesandimprovecodingaccuracy Exercise independent judgment in determining when documentation supportsbilling, when clarification is required,andwhen escalation is necessary Conduct ongoing review of charge sessionsandcodingwork queues to ensure accuracy, timeliness,andcompliance with departmental standards Monitorandanalyze reports to identify patterns, gaps,andopportunities for process improvementandrevenue optimization Support internal auditsandcompliance initiatives; assist in the developmentandimplementation of corrective actions as needed Contribute to process improvement efforts, including recommending enhancements to workflows, systems,andcodingpractices Stay current on regulatory updates,codingchanges,andindustry best practices; apply this knowledge to departmental operations Provide cross-coverageandsupport for othercodingareas, including anesthesia servicesandsubspecialty procedures, as needed Perform additional dutiesandparticipate in special projects as assigned Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience Minimum of four (4) years of professionalcodingexperience in a healthcare setting, including complex specialtycoding Preferred Qualifications AAPC CPC, CANPC, or equivalent certification required (non-apprentice designation strongly preferred) Demonstrated expertise in professional servicescoding, including evaluationandmanagement (inpatientandoutpatient) Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology,andmedical terminology Experience interpreting payer policiesandapplying regulatory guidance in complex scenarios Epic or similar electronic health record experience preferred Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran Columbia University is committed to the hiring of qualified local residents. #J-18808-Ljbffr Columbia University
