JOB SUMMARY: The Support Counselor I role entails providing supervision to program clients, facilitating programming, assisting with staff scheduling, documenting client activity, and ensuring a clean and safe environment at all times. Candidates must possess a strong sense of responsibility and knowledge of program rules, coupled with demonstrated problem-solving skills to handle diverse situations. Working within defined limits and subject to direct instruction, Support Counselor I should be adept at relating to individuals from various backgrounds and possess sufficient understanding of homelessness, substance use disorders, and mental health challenges to collaborate effectively with colleagues. Flexible availability for day, evening, weekday, and weekend shifts is required, with additional support provided in other areas of daily program functioning as designated by the Program Officer or Senior Program Officer.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Perform regular room and facility checks to ensure client safety and well-being.
• Assist clients with daily independent living skills such as cooking and cleaning.
• Ensure clients adhere to approved timeframes for outings and clients follow program guidelines.
• Clean and organize the business office as required.
• Contact staff in emergencies involving clients or facility.
• Assist in searching incoming clients’ belongings to remove contraband.
• Log incoming medications and create new medication logs.
• Assist with client check-in process, meal service, mail distribution, and program activities.
• Maintain confidentiality in dealing with client and staff matters.
• Perform routine cleaning duties.
• Provide transportation to and from programing with program vehicle.
• Demonstrate effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Remain flexible and adaptable in various situations.
• Maintain professional boundaries with clients.
• If applicable, monitor clients receiving Withdrawal Management services and complete detoxification monitoring logs.
• If applicable, supervise residents’ self-administration of medications.
• Participate in food preparation and/or meal service.
• Fulfill other assigned duties as necessary.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Professional appearance and demeanor.
• Valid California Driver’s License and automobile insurance.
• CPR/First Aid Certification and TB clearance.
• Familiarity with program rules and trained in Naloxone administration and client overdose protocols.
• Strong problem-solving skills to assist staff in various situations.
• Ability to work within defined limits under direct instruction.
• Ability to relate to individuals from diverse backgrounds and possess recovery knowledge to support treatment staff.
• Flexibility and adaptability in various situations.
• Maintain professional boundaries with clients.
• (GH Program) One year clean and sober. Due to the nature of the position, the “one year clean and sober” requirement applies to individuals in remission from a substance use disorder and is defined as abstention from the use and consumption of alcohol, cannabis, and illegal drugs, abstention from the use of prescribed drugs in a manner that is not consistent with the prescription directions, and/or abstention from the use of over-the-counter drugs in a manner that is not consistent with directions for the use of such drugs.

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

• Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position
• Provide assistance in meal service, cleaning, oversee use of facilities like laundry, distribution of supplies and mail, etc.
• Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions
• Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone, computer, calculator and office machines at required speed and accuracy
• Vision sufficient to read handwritten and printed materials and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
• Hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold telephone conversations in the normal range;
• Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distances on the telephone and addressing groups
• Physical stamina sufficient to sustain light to medium physical labor for up to 8 hours, sit and/or walk for prolonged periods of time
• Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, climb slopes, stairs, ramps and to respond to emergency situations
• Physical strength sufficient to periodically lift, carry, push and/or pull 40 pounds of materials or supplies; occasionally lift, carry, push and/or pull more than 40 pounds with assistance

Salary $22.71 - $27.60 per hour. Additional 5% if bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish.
