Assistant Girls Basketball Coach (NEPSAC AAA) Position Specifics The Assistant Girls' Basketball Coach is responsible for building various aspects of the Girls' Basketball Program, including recruiting, training, and coaching team members. The Coach must abide by NEPSAC AAA regulations and the rules set by Darrow School’s Board of Trustees, Head of School, Senior Administrative Team, and Director of Athletics. The position could include on‑campus housing for the right candidate, subject to teaching and residential duties. This is a part‑time position that runs from the start of the school year and ends after the basketball season has concluded. Responsibilities Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and sportsmanship. Coordinate the development, promotion, and retention of the girls' basketball program. Work as a liaison between Darrow’s Admissions Office and prospective student‑athletes. Assist the Director of Athletics with coordination of team logistics. Hold team meetings for prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate. Ensure program goals align with overall Athletic Department objectives. Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time for individual and team development. Hold a preseason meeting with student‑athletes before the first official game. Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practices, and trips; encourage sportsmanlike conduct. Take necessary precautions to protect student‑athletes, equipment, and facilities. Serve as a liaison between NCAA member schools in the college recruitment process. Participate in special school activities, including senior night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies. Hold conferences with parents/guardians regarding athletic performance. Follow procedures for athlete injuries in collaboration with Athletic Training staff. Represent Darrow School and the Girls' Basketball program professionally within the community. Maintain nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or appropriate administrator. Required Qualifications 2‑4 years of experience coaching basketball at the high‑school level (college coaching/playing experience preferred). Effective coaching techniques and knowledge of basketball rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, governing organizations (NEPSAC), opponents, officials, staff, parents, and students. Comprehensive knowledge of the game and current coaching techniques. Knowledge of NEPSAC rules and regulations. Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise student‑athletes. Demonstrated history of placing student‑athletes in college programs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Exceptional organizational, administrative, and leadership skills. Willingness and ability to drive to and from events, including competitions and medical appointments. Attention to detail and dedication to student success. Ability to relate to students and teach them on and off the court. Willingness to accept a high level of accountability. Ability to assess players and coaches effectively. Progressive thinking while valuing planning and preparation. Valid driver’s license; ability to drive school vehicles (training provided). Commitment to the boarding school lifestyle (24 h a day, 7 days a week). Alignment with the school’s educational philosophy. Physical Requirements Must be able to talk or hear during duties. Must sit, stand, walk, use hands to find, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. Must bend, reach, stoop, stand, and walk for extended periods. Must lift and move objects up to 25 lb safely and consistently. Must work outdoors in adverse weather conditions. Must work in environments with dust, pollen, odors, dampness, and noise. Position requires extensive walking, climbing stairs, and driving.
