Senior Laboratory Scientist
National Jewish Health is seeking a Senior Laboratory Scientist to join the Complement Laboratory, a specialized diagnostic laboratory supporting the evaluation of immune system and complement disorders. This role offers the opportunity to perform high-complexity testing while serving as a technical resource within a collaborative team dedicated to quality, innovation, and scientific excellence. The Senior Laboratory Scientist plays a critical role in ensuring accurate and reliable test results that support patient diagnosis, treatment, and research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform and oversee high-complexity laboratory testing in accordance with CAP, CLIA, and laboratory quality standards.
- Troubleshoot assay and instrumentation issues, perform maintenance activities, and support quality control and proficiency testing programs.
- Review, analyze, and document laboratory data to ensure accurate and timely reporting of patient results.
- Serve as a technical resource for laboratory staff by providing guidance, training, competency support, and operational expertise.
- Participate in procedure development, SOP reviews, inspection readiness activities, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment to support efficient laboratory operations.
- Collaborate with laboratory leadership and team members to improve processes, solve complex technical challenges, and support departmental goals.

Essential Duties:
- Performs high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory leadership. Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Follows set guidelines to troubleshoot/correct assay problems or instrument malfunctions. Performs maintenance and works with supervisor/manager in troubleshooting QC or instrument problems. Identifies and assists in troubleshooting with peers.
- Follows the laboratory's and NJH established policies and procedure manuals. Reviews and signs laboratory and personnel SOP on an annual basis. Is responsible for completing NetLearning in a timely manner. Follows specific biosafety standards for the laboratory and protocols for handling potentially infectious material.
- Performs error correction, data entry, and compilation of data packets as required. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Participates and maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. May performs QC review as necessary.
- Follows GxP (e.g., GLP, GCLP, GCP, etc.) standards as defined by different national and international organizations (e.g., ISO, FDA, OECD, etc.) when appropriate.
- Performs, observes, and reviews competencies (including age-specific competencies and/or non-human species) as identified through the departmental competency program.
- Appropriately uses the computer systems in the department, including proper use of order/reports/charging, and maximizes personal proficiency. Responds appropriately to email and other forms of communication in a timely manner.
- Makes recommendations to improve laboratory operations and performs extra projects of increasing complexity and skill and completes projects as directed and approved by the supervisor.
- Is responsible for maintaining and ordering appropriate levels of reagents and consumables in the laboratory at all times.
- Assists, in partnership with supervisor, in preparation for inspections where required.
- Functions as technical supervisor or general supervisor (per CLIA and CAP) as applicable. Provides direction and guidance in testing operations as directed by supervisor.
- Writes and reviews procedure manuals and documents.
- Attends continuing education programs sponsored by National Jewish, manufacturer in-services and/or professional society programs. Obtains at least 12 approved CEU credits per year including but not limited to the following: webinars, lunch and learn seminars, seminars, etc.

- Performs as a back-up to staff absences and vacancies, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelors of Science degree in biology, chemistry or a related scientific field required.
