Medical Instrument Technician (Hemodialysis)

Summary The Wilmington VA Medical Center is recruiting a Medical Instrument Technician (Hemodialysis Technician) to work in the Hemodialysis Unit. The MIT will operate and monitor dialysis systems for stable chronic patients and may assist with peritoneal dialysis and related procedures. Qualifications U.S. citizenship required; non‑citizens may only be appointed in accordance with VA policy. No specific educational requirements, but strong preference for candidates with relevant certifications or training (e.g., GS‑6 or above). BCLS and ACLS certifications are desirable. Proficient in spoken and written English. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level; preferred minimum 2 years of relevant experience. Knowledge of hemodialysis equipment and procedures, peritoneal dialysis, and ability to assist in percutaneous renal biopsies. Ability to provide instruction to patients, physicians, nurses, and technicians on dialysis techniques. Experience in dialysis initiation, monitoring, termination, medication administration (lidocaine, heparin, saline), and care documentation. Basic Requirements Grade: GS‑08. Eligibility for BCLS and ACLS certifications is desired. Position represents the full performance level of this vacancy. Duties Operate diagnostic and therapeutic instruments for acute and chronic renal failure patients. Perform routine dialysis treatments under supervision of RN charge nurse or team leader. Initiate, monitor, and terminate dialysis; administer medications (lidocaine, heparin, saline); complete care documentation. Maintain, troubleshoot, disinfect equipment; monitor water quality; restock supplies; prepare dialysate concentrates. Support peritoneal and hemodialysis procedures and assist in percutaneous renal biopsies. Educate patients for home/self‑care dialysis and train physicians, nurses, and technicians on dialysis techniques. Physical Requirements See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Work Schedule Monday – Friday and every other Saturday, 5:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Benefits and Compensation Competitive salary and regular salary increases. Paid time off (37–50 days per year).
