Job Description

Department: Orthopedic Clinic

Schedule: Part-time days

Location: Rochester, MI

GENERAL SUMMARY:

As a Medical Assistant in our Orthopedic Clinic, you'll be the vital link between our patients and clinical team. Working under the direction of our providers and nursing leadership, you'll deliver compassionate, high-quality care by seamlessly blending administrative expertise with clinical skills. Your role is essential in creating a welcoming environment where patients feel heard, prepared, and confident in their care journey.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Welcome patients with warmth and professionalism, guiding them through their visit and preparing them for examinations, procedures, and treatments with attention to detail and compassion.
• Gather and document vital signs and comprehensive patient histories using critical thinking, ensuring accurate information that drives quality clinical decisions.
• Collaborate with providers to prepare for and assist with examinations and procedures, following established protocols while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
• Safely administer medications and immunizations as prescribed, meticulously documenting all actions and maintaining detailed records that support continuity of care.
• Maintain thorough, accurate documentation in our electronic health record system, ensuring all patient interactions and clinical activities are properly recorded.
• Stay alert and respond promptly to patient emergencies, demonstrating quick thinking and composure in critical moments.
• Actively engage with patient communications—managing phone calls, messages, and patient portal inquiries—responding within established timeframes to ensure patients feel supported throughout their care.
• Efficiently process medication refills, radiology orders, and lab requests in the EHR, facilitating smooth workflows for provider review and approval.
• Provide clear, compassionate discharge instructions to patients and caregivers, empowering them with the information needed for successful recovery and follow-up care.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. 
• Basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills preferred. 
• Ability to perform a wide variety of clinical skills as related to ambulatory patient care preferred. 
• Ability to problem-solve preferred.
• Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills preferred.
• EPIC (Electronic Medical Record) experience preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: 

• Current BLS-C upon hire or successful completion by end of orientation

Additional Requirements: 

• Graduate of a Medical Assistant program with completion of a formal clinical externship (160 hour minimum). OR 
• Graduate from a Medical Assistant program without completion of a clinical externship but with a minimum one-year experience in clinical medical assisting within the past five (5) years. OR 
• Current Professionally Recognized Medical Assistant Certification with a minimum of one year of experience in clinical medical assisting. OR 
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). OR 
• Licensed Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with at least one year clinical experience in clinical medical setting within the past five (5) years. OR 
• Military trained medical personnel with at least one-year clinical experience in clinical medical setting within the past five (5) years. 

 

Must Successfully complete all components of Ambulatory orientation as defined by Henry Ford Health.
