Executive Director, Applied AI/ML Lead

Salary: $61,000 - 101,000 per year Requirements:

• We need 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building production systems at scale, with recent emphasis on search, conversational AI, or workflow automation.
• We need expert-level proficiency in Python, distributed systems, API design, and microservices architecture.
• We need a strong understanding of LLM capabilities and limitations, including prompt engineering, context management, and output parsing, using models as components without training or fine-tuning them.
• We need deep experience with retrieval systems, conversational AI, or agentic architectures across more than one of these areas.
• We need strong systems thinking, with the ability to design for latency, throughput, cost efficiency, and graceful degradation in non-deterministic AI systems.
• We need hands-on experience with AWS cloud services for production applications.
• We need a proven ability to raise team output through technical leadership without depending on management hierarchy.
• We need excellent technical communication skills with both engineering and non-technical audiences.
• Preferred: experience building evaluation and testing frameworks for LLM-powered applications.
• Preferred: familiarity with advanced RAG patterns, including query decomposition, multi-index routing, contextual compression, and knowledge graph integration.
• Preferred: experience with agent orchestration at scale, including parallel tool execution, stateful workflows, and cost/token management.
• Preferred: experience operating AI-powered systems in regulated environments, including model governance and explainability.

• We architect, design, and personally implement production-grade search, chatbot, and agentic workflow systems, writing and reviewing code every day.
• We serve as the senior technical authority on LLM-powered applications, owning decisions around retrieval strategies, agent design, orchestration patterns, and system architecture.
• We design and build scalable retrieval pipelines, including hybrid search, re-ranking, chunking, and embedding strategies, along with conversational AI systems that have robust dialogue management and backend integration.
• We design and implement agentic workflows for complex business processes, including tool use, multi-step planning, orchestration, error recovery, and human-in-the-loop patterns.
• We solve challenging systems problems such as latency optimization, reliability at scale, observability, and evaluation of non-deterministic systems.
• We define technical standards, design patterns, and reference architectures for generative AI-powered applications across the organization.
• We raise engineering quality through design reviews, code reviews, and technical mentorship.
• We partner with product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical designs.
