Managing Attorney

STAR is seeking an experienced, survivor-centered attorney to serve as Managing Attorney, providing leadership and oversight for STAR's Legal Program across all branches. The Managing Attorney supervises the Legal team while maintaining a direct-service caseload and ensuring survivors receive consistent, high-quality, trauma-informed legal services.

Key Responsibilities

The Managing Attorney oversees the implementation and evaluation of STAR's Legal Program across all branches, helping ensure consistent and effective service delivery. This position maintains and updates program procedures and protocols, identifies barriers or gaps in legal services, and works collaboratively with leadership and other program areas to implement practical improvements. The Managing Attorney represents the Legal Program in organizational planning and promotes coordinated, trauma-informed services across STAR.

A significant component of the role is staff supervision and development. The Managing Attorney supervises Staff Attorneys, the Legal Services Coordinator, and Legal Externs and participates in hiring, onboarding, training, and professional development. The position facilitates Legal team meetings and provides regular one-on-one supervision, guidance, and performance feedback. The Managing Attorney is responsible for ensuring team members fulfill their responsibilities, provide timely and effective services, and meet STAR's documentation and performance standards.

In addition to program leadership, the Managing Attorney provides direct legal services to survivors and maintains an active caseload of approximately 10–15 clients. The Managing Attorney provides comprehensive legal representation and works to ensure consistency in the legal services available to survivors across STAR's branches.

The Managing Attorney is also responsible for maintaining accurate and timely client documentation and ensuring survivor files are complete, organized, and current. The position monitors grant-related responsibilities within the Legal Program, ensures deliverables are completed within required timelines, and assists with grant reports and documentation required by funders.

Additional responsibilities include participating in organizational staff meetings, maintaining continuing education requirements, completing required administrative documentation, fulfilling applicable mandated-reporting responsibilities under Louisiana law, and participating in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates must be currently licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Louisiana and have professional supervisory experience, including experience providing guidance, feedback, and performance oversight to staff.

Successful candidates should demonstrate strong legal research, writing, advocacy, case-management, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to provide comprehensive legal representation while managing program-level responsibilities. Candidates must exercise sound professional judgment, maintain confidentiality, manage competing priorities, and effectively supervise and develop a legal services team.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to survivor-centered and trauma-informed legal practice and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines. Experience providing legal services to survivors of sexual violence, crime victims, or other vulnerable populations; managing a legal services program; and working within a nonprofit or grant-funded environment is preferred.
