Duties Description RNs hired to work within an IRA providing shift work will be assigned to various tasks described below. The RN will be expected to act within their scope of Practice. It is the responsibility of the RN to seek clarification report to the Treatment Team Leader (TTL), RN Supervisor (RNS1), Administrator on Duty (AOD), or Physician on Call (POC) if there is a lack of understanding of their role/responsibilities during their shift.


• Assists Site Assigned RN, direct care staff, clinicians and providers in identification of individuals' needs and participates in the development of plans to address goals. Communicates concerns, findings, follow up with Site Assigned RN.
• Administers medications and treatments to individuals as prescribed.
• Obtains and records individuals' vital signs using standard instruments and procedures and acts accordingly. Initiates and directs appropriate monitoring checklist based on symptoms or circumstance (resp, post hospitalization, neuro checklist)
• Assess, monitor, and records individuals' symptoms and conditions to obtain and report information for diagnosis and treatment; identifies responses to medication or changes in health status: obligated to report to providers or EMS as warranted.
• Prepares individual for and/or assists with examinations and appointments.
• Maintains health record of individuals' condition and/or administered treatments.
• Educates and counsels families of individuals and direct care staff regarding individuals' health, medications, treatment goals and procedures.
• Generate PONS and train if warranted during their shift.
• Monitors medication and supply inventories and completes requisition forms to ensure adequate supplies.
• May observe and educate the activities of direct care staff, including the administration of medication, to ensure compliance with regulations such as medication certifications, competencies of direct care staff.
• Attends to individuals' personal needs, including activities of daily living and hygiene tasks, such as bathing, dressing, feeding and grooming.
• May perform housekeeping tasks, such as changing linens, and assist other staff in cleaning to ensure a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for individuals.
• Engages with individuals routinely, communicates to families, listens to concerns, and encourages them to participate in treatment and rehabilitation activities.
• Transcribes medications/treatments on EMAR and paper MAR and monitors for completion and accuracy.
• Provides approval to start a new medication/treatment.
• Provides triage needs during shift when needed and provides direction to staff.

Minimum Qualifications Must have a license and a current registration as a registered professional nurse in New York State.


Additional Comments This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status. You will not have to take an exam to gain permanent competitive status.

• Please note that starting salary for this title reflects the increased hiring salary and geographic pay differential. Posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 18 ($66,951), Increased Hiring Salary ($9,196), and Geographic Pay Differential ($20,000). Geographic Pay Differential is added to the job rate ($85,138).

• If you are currently a New York State employee serving in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law, you may be appointed to this title as a permanent competitive employee.

• The assignment of PS&T employees will be made in accordance with any agreed upon Memorandum of Understanding between PEF and the local DDSO regarding the posting of job vacancies.
