Job Summary


The Accountant III performs professional-level accounting and analytical work of moderate complexity. This role coordinates activity in the Uniform Statewide Accounting System and is responsible for university post-award grant accounting.

Essential Duties

1. Performs grant related post-award functions, including budget and accounting transactions, invoicing, financial reporting, and associated communication with faculty, staff, and others. Supports the sponsored programs department in financial reporting and grant accounting for post-award grant administration.
2. Reviews and prepares requests for journal voucher entries; enters adjustments into the accounting system. Reconciles certain university accounts and assists other departments with reconciliations. Interprets and analyzes data and points out trends or deviations from standards within financial reporting. Prepares analytical data for department and Finance and Administration division use.
3. Enters data and reconciles information in the Uniform Statewide Accounting System.
4. Assists with compilation of the annual financial report for the University. Prepares departmental financial reporting as needed
5. Serves as the primary backup to the Director of Accounting, ensuring continuity of operations in their absence. Communicates with faculty, staff, and others in the course of performing work and coordination of tasks.
6. Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge

• Knowledge of basic general ledger accounting practices and procedures
• Knowledge of State financial reporting requirements and guidelines
• Knowledge of fund accounting and ability to reconcile financial or budget records
• Knowledge of the operation of personal computers and the use of word processing and spreadsheet software with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field required; accounting degree preferred.
• 5+ years progressive, professional level accounting experience required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Banner ERP and Higher Ed experience preferred.
