Immediate opening for a Litigation Associate in Newport Beach, CA who possesses:

• 2 to 5 years of California litigation experience
• Active California Bar membership in good standing
• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school

• Proactive, detail-oriented work style with the ability to anticipate next steps and take ownership of assignments

FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a talented Litigation Associate to join a collaborative California law firm in Newport Beach. This direct-hire opportunity is ideal for an attorney with 2 to 5 years of California litigation experience who wants meaningful involvement throughout the entire lifecycle of a case while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The selected attorney will work directly alongside a partner on matters from inception through resolution, gaining hands-on experience with case strategy, discovery, depositions, motion practice, hearings, mediation, and trial preparation. The firm maintains a manageable 1,700-hour annual billable expectation and provides a strong environment for long-term professional development and increased case ownership.

 

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

• Working directly with an experienced partner to collaboratively manage litigation matters from inception through resolution
• Participating in all stages of the litigation process
• Supporting development of case strategy and litigation planning
• Conducting legal research and analysis
• Drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests, responses, and other legal documents
• Managing written discovery and supporting deposition preparation
• Participating in and preparing for depositions
• Preparing for hearings, mediations, and settlement conferences
• Supporting trial preparation and other case-related proceedings
• Taking ownership of assigned matters and proactively identifying appropriate next steps
• Keeping cases moving forward through strong organization and follow-through
• Communicating professionally with clients regarding case status and strategy
• Communicating with opposing counsel, courts, experts, and other legal professionals
• Monitoring litigation deadlines and ensuring timely completion of assigned work
• Maintaining organized electronic and physical case files
• Tracking and recording billable time accurately
• Delivering thorough, detail-oriented legal work
• Collaborating closely with partners, associates, paralegals, and support staff
• Providing excellent client service throughout the litigation process
• Developing litigation skills and taking on greater responsibility as experience grows
• Maintaining confidentiality and exercising sound professional judgment
• Meeting an annual billable-hour expectation of approximately 1,700 hours
• Performing other litigation and legal duties as assigned

 

The selected candidate will also possess:

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required
• Active California Bar membership in good standing required
• 2 to 5 years of California litigation experience required
• Approximately 2 to 3 years of experience highly preferred
• Experience handling California litigation matters from inception through resolution preferred
• Experience in any area of California litigation will be considered
• Employment litigation experience preferred, but not required
• Employer-side employment litigation experience a plus
• Business, commercial, healthcare, or related litigation experience a plus
• Strong legal research skills required
• Strong legal writing skills required
• Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills required
• Experience drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, and discovery documents required
• Discovery and deposition experience preferred
• Motion practice experience preferred
• Mediation and trial-preparation experience preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
• Strong attention to detail required
• Excellent organizational and deadline-management skills required
• Ability to anticipate needs and identify next steps proactively

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods while conducting legal research, drafting documents, reviewing discovery, and managing case files
• Ability to use hands and fingers for typing, document preparation, filing, scanning, and standard office tasks
• Ability to review pleadings, discovery, legal research, correspondence, case files, and computer screens for extended periods
• Ability to communicate by phone, email, video conference, and in person throughout the workday
• Ability to attend meetings, hearings, depositions, mediations, and other legal proceedings as required
• Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the office or courthouse environment
• Ability to occasionally lift, carry, or move standard case files, binders, records, and office materials
• Ability to maintain confidentiality, accuracy, organization, and attention to detail while managing multiple litigation matters and deadlines

 

Salary Range: $170,000 to $225,000/year DOE, plus discretionary performance-based bonus opportunities
