Weekend Maintenance Mechanic I — Packaging Machinery

Job Details The Manufacturing Maintenance Mechanic I will be working a weekend schedule: either Weekend Day: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM, Friday – Sunday Weekend Evening: 6:00 PM – 6:30 AM, Friday – Sunday Job Summary Repairs and maintains machinery and electromechanical equipment in packaging, processing, distribution, and plant infrastructure. Trains and mentors less skilled maintenance mechanics. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Installs, operates, maintains, repairs, lubricates, and troubleshoots complex processing and high‑speed packaging machinery and other equipment such as gear boxes, variable speed drives, pumps, compressors, dust collection equipment, code daters, check weighers, etc. Performs predictive and preventive maintenance activities as outlined in the CMMS system. Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots all types of AC and DC electrical equipment. Fabricates components using standard shop equipment including lathe, mill, drill press, brake, shear, band saw, and various welding equipment. Operates production equipment as part of troubleshooting, and validation of completed maintenance activity. Assists Engineering in installation of new equipment, working from drawings, verbal instructions, and/or sketches. Works with technical support, the operations group, and peer mechanics to resolve problematic machine or personnel issues. Maintains spare parts inventory for the plant by checking out parts, using the parts ordering procedure, and restocking inventory. Maintains shop areas and parts room to be clean and orderly. Actively participates in root‑cause analysis and other plant continuous improvement initiatives. Recommends and implements continuous improvement ideas. Occasionally performs work in other areas such as building maintenance. Complies with safety and cGMP requirements, follows lock‑out/tag‑out procedures, and wears all personal protective equipment as directed by Company Safety Policy. Effectively provides and accepts constructive peer‑to‑peer feedback on safety performance. Adheres to policies, procedures, SOPs, safe work practices, and safety policies and procedures. Reports ALL workplace incidents to supervisor immediately. Communicates concerns to supervisor, reports hazards, and provides input on prevention. Properly uses, wears, and stores personal protective equipment when required. Participates on safety teams and/or completes safety‑related activities as part of regular job responsibilities. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and Experience Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school plus a minimum of two years of related experience, or a minimum of five years of related experience. Comprehensive knowledge of machine troubleshooting, electrical, mechanical, fabrication, pneumatics, hydraulics, OSHA standards, cGMPs, and lock‑out/tag‑out is required. Food or pharmaceutical industry experience preferred. Performance Ability Demonstrated strong working knowledge and ability to repair packaging and processing production equipment within one year from the date of employment. Solid knowledge of machine capabilities, manufacturing process, and ability to troubleshoot. Ability to train and mentor other employees, including lesser‑skilled maintenance mechanics. Demonstrated ability to consistently meet quality, safety and efficiency goals. Excellent problem‑solving, organizational, and planning skills; ability to prioritize and calmly handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast‑paced environment; initiative to complete tasks on time with minimal supervision; and flexibility to change tasks frequently and work in different work centers as business needs require. Strong teamwork and communication skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated high quality of work. Consistently follows all company policies and procedures, including all safety policies and procedures. Other Skills and Abilities Basic computer skills required. Demonstrates an understanding of company priorities and core values, and daily activities must support them. Must read and understand electrical and mechanical blueprints, use simple shop math, and possess knowledge of company, local, state, and federal electrical codes. Ability to quickly understand the theory of operation of both processing and high‑speed packaging equipment. Must be familiar with PLC, solid state, and servo control. Possesses a working knowledge of electrical test equipment such as digital multimeter, amp probe, megger, etc. Ability to work other shifts and weekends and to travel to other facilities. Physical Demands Regularly required to stand and move throughout the facility; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, including overhead reaching and horizontally on a ladder; ascend and/or descend stairs; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Regularly lift, move, slide, and raise items: step on and off ladders and equipment at 24 inches; grasp 50 lbs of force; push and pull 42 lbs of force at 36 inches; lift up to 60 lbs from floor to waist; lift up to 60 lbs from 31 inches, carry for 5 feet and return to 31‑inch surface. Work Environment Work occurs near moving mechanical parts, with exposure to herbal aromas, dust, and airborne particles that may be allergens or irritants. The position works in all areas of the manufacturing facilities with direct exposure to ingredients (powders and liquids), mixes, equipment, and packaging. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions, and is exposed to fumes, cold, and heat.
